Bought this bottle set last week for my birthday.
The Lasanta was really good.
The 10yr was good, reminds me a bit to much of Jack Daniels for some reason, lots of banana. I don't think I'd buy it again.

if you feel like spending $200 - $300 on a decantur you can go to Macy’s. they have some very nice Waterford decanters in that price range

Let's talk Irish whiskey.

I think Jameson is a cloying syrupy mess and is easily my least favorite whiskey and I thought I hated all Irish whiskey until I tried Bushmill's. I like the standard stuff, but I like Black Bush and especially Red Bush much more. Tullamore Dew reminds me of Jameson but with some contrast and two dimensionality in the flavor profile that the latter lacked and wasn't just an estery sweet syrupy mess. I tried Slane recently and enjoyed the shit out of it, some new brand of dubious origin probably from Diageo but it was tasty.

Given this, where should I go from here?

You know how some people have different taste receptors, so they think cilantro tastes like soapy dishwater?

Well, some people are more sensitive than others to butyric acid. I'm one of them. The Balvenie (the predominant malt in the Monkey Shoulder blend) tastes to me like someone vomited up some half-digested plums and then bottled it.

So needless to say, I'm not a fan. But others with "normal" palates seem to really like it.

Monkey shoulder puts more money into marketing than into making a good whisky. It's got a decent nose, but no body to speak of.

Default recommendation for cheap but decent is highland park 12yo.
Talisker 10 is also surprisingly cheap for how good it is

Opened a bottle of Glendronach 12 last night. Very good. Only thing is that my local store was selling it for 80 bucks. Seems a bit much for a 12 year old scotch. 40 to 50 would have been more reasonable

Looks like it goes for about 60 burgerbucks around here. That's also the price Macallan 12 goes for. I guess most of the premium comes from the sherry casks.

So I'm new to the whisky thing. Trying to find a brand that I can enjoy. So far I've tried:
-Herman Marshal (local brewery)
-Knob Creek
-Little bit of Jack Daniels original

I'm looking for a whisky bar that lets me run floats or samplers so I can find something I like. I'm in the DFW area. I don't care if it's whisky, whiskey, bourbon, scotch, or something else. I'd prefer this than dropping multiple 50s on bottles that I may try once and never drink again.

I know there's The Londoner, but I'm hoping to find something a little closer to home. What does the hive recommend?

Yeah, piss cheap scotch is shit. I guess you could read that as talking shit, but the fact of the matter is that at lower price points, scotch can't compete with bourbon. Cheap bourbon still gets you something aged in fresh casks, as opposed to a shitty scotch grain whisky aged in 9th and 10th refills. Unless someone posts a price range, I'm going to assume poorfag means they want the cheapest palatable bottle. You can get drinkable bourbon for $20 per 1.75 liters. Scotch doesn't get drinkable until you hit stuff that costs ~$30 per 0.75 L.

>> No.9847161

>>9847078
Truth. You can (for the time being) get very good quality bourbon for half the price of an acceptable scotch. Although I'm now seeing a shit ton of bourbons in the $50+ range that didn't exist a few years ago. Really tickles the pickle.

>> No.9847211

Not necessarily. Cheap scotch is definitely more of a crap shoot but if you're looking for something cheaper you could always go with monkey shoulder. It's blended but quite a nice dram. Especially for the price.

Famous Grouse is pretty good for an inexpensive scotch. Grants is okay.

I would recommend trying to save up a bit and buy the next price level of scotches though if you can; you'll get a much better bang for your buck.

Strathisla, Monkey Shoulder, Johnny Walker Black, and Island Of Jura are all good choices.

I got your point, but just to make it clear, I am rather a noob than a douchebag. I've been buying really cheap scotch whiskies and for once I wanted to spend a bit more. So that bottle thing was the most expensive I was willing to spend my money on, with the obvious mean of simply getting started into the world of whisky...

good sellers=/=good whisky in comparison to everything else out there. they sell because of marketing and price since thats all you need to push anything in this era of economics.
glenfiddich 12 is decent compared to some entry level scotches but you tell me you'd take glenlivet or chivas regal over a glendronach 12 or even the 8? and thats the issue. glenlivet cask strength is great stuff but the entry level stuff like the 12 and especially the reserve blue box is not worth the time or money especially when Auchentoshan and Aberlour are the same money or less.
