I do it all the time. Get stuff from the food bar and then proceed to eat 3/4 of the container well I do the rest of my shopping.

Used to work in retail and people let their kids do this all the time. It didn't bother me I just scanned the empties through. I wouldn't have given a shit if they were stealing anyway

When I was a kid we had an Albertsons by our house that had a big refrigerated drinks display by the entrance, and a sign suggesting that you have a drink while you shop.
As long as you scan the empty when you get to checkout, I don't think anybody really gives a fuck.
