Where did "cola" even come from? What is it? Is it supposed to be caramel flavor or....? What is the cola flavor?

It seems, interesting to me, that a flavor could just be made up and popularized so well. Usually in human history we have pre established flavors, like certain fruits or what have you, but cola confuses me
