Whats a good knife block that isn't $100? I see pine, bamboo, painted, punji stick death pit blocks. Does the material matter when storing knives?

A magnet strip is $10

it shouldn't really come in contact with the blade edge, and therefore the material it's made of does not matter

I don't have a good place to mount a magnet strip in my kitchen; tile backsplash and open design. I don't really like the looks of them either.

I just use a container filled with bamboo skewers. I never need to hunt for the right size hole.

That's aesthetic bro.
Anything special on the bottom on the box for the tip?

Use skewers that are longer than the knives and they won't touch the bottom.

hmmm, I'm finding blocks that are decent enough, and cheap enough, but one of my chef knives is 55mm wide, and the widest measurement I can find is 51mm. Not to mention the cheap ones look like an 8 year old's birdhouse in terms of quality.

As I expand my knife collection, I know i want some bigger knives. I may just have to pay $100 for a shun block.
