I realize that there is an alcohol thread, but I haven't seen a good beer thread lately. I bought a couple of image fagmiliar. Recommend/post some stouts that might be available in the southern part of the US, please. Also, what's your favorite beer? I know IPA, but after that...

Sounds good. I wish I'd picked up several different stouts instead of two of these. I like it, but it's got a tad too much alcohol content for it's flavor.
That being my opinion, I can see how people enjoy stouts with higher abv. This one just ain't my bag. It's not terrible, though.

No idea, I bought it in the city it was brewed in, and I don't rely on websites to tell me what to drink. Imo there are unquestionably better beers available (including many from the UP), but it is extremely drinkable and has a good if mellow flavor. If you had a friend who drinks macros and wants to get into craft/micro it would be a good option to share. You're not looking at something as hoppy as say an IPA, or heavy as a stout. I guess you could call it a session beer

It sounds good to me. Ive never made a purchase based on a website. Only recommendations from here or friends. I'm going to ask the guy at the beer store next time to recommend me a good range of different styles and have a friend or three do a tasting with me. Honestly if you're interested in that brewery imo their best is honey lav, it's a good "drink ice cold at the beach" summer beer. I thought I'd hate drinking lavender flavor but I'll be fucked if it isn't great. Anyhow I could gush about UP beers lots but piss on that idea. I will say upper Michigan is worth it if you're into beer tourism. I've always liked bell's Oberon/Two Hearted/other Kalamazoo options but damn their new upper hand lineup is phenomenal.. like two years old or so. If you find yourself in escanaba, do yourself a favor and get a pint at Hereford & Hops. I've not met a beer of theirs I didn't love but their crown jewel/popular offering is whitetail ale (it's pretty good but not their best). I recommend Cleary Red

I'm not sure how I feel about aged IPAs

My ex gf got us an 8 year aged DIPA from Keegan Ales in Poughkeepsie (the bottle cost $40 l m a o) and it tastes like carbonated sugar syrup. Absolutely overpowering and nothing like an IPA.

I'm a firm believer in the fresher the better for IPAs.

Black note is incredibly smooth but still has great body. It's awesome. Apparently it is a blend of bba expedition and bba double cream, and the double cream, being the low and smooth part of the equation some times doesnt bba well so the expedition is supposedly twice as rare as the black note and pretty big. Since AB InBev failed at competing with actual craft breweries, they just started throwing insane amounts of money at the ownership of craft breweries and buying them out. So far they haven't fucked up Elysian much, but I'll point to Goose Island as a reference to what eventually happens.

Goose Island IPA is still as good as ever. Evidently AB InBev isn't tampering with the brew's recipe, mass production or not.

On that note, is mass-production really such a bad thing for craft-beer? I don't see people complaining about Stone or Brooklyn when they produce enough to ship internationally.

>is mass-production really such a bad thing for craft-beer?
According to beer neckbeards anything popular is bad.

The entire "craft beer" culture in America was built by edgy malcontents whose entire lives revolved around the avoidance of the mainstream. Through sheer force of will they managed to convince several generations of youngsters that edgy X-TREEM is good. Their own success was their undoing. Good beer became "normal beer", reactionaries began to embrace balance instead of extremes, and these hardened embittered "craft beer" neckbeards roam around aimlessly like a war veteran with PTSD, screeching about PISSWATER and whining about how terrible it is that companies like Goose Island received capital injections to make good beer even MORE widely available than before.

>I don't see people complaining about Stone or Brooklyn

That's because those beers are beneath contempt, so why even mention them. If a beer is known by more than three people it's PISSWATER.

>Good beer became "normal beer"

You hit the nail on the head! Consumer standards for beer worldwide have soared to the point that previously niche breweries are now the big dogs on the market, with more and more microbreweries flooding in to saturate it. Beer hipsterism has become mainstream, and it's easy to see how the iconoclast feels even more alienated than before now Chad McNormie's sipping from his glass.

Still, what matters at the end of the day is quality, and I would rather have good beer shipped from the other side of the Atlantic than subsist on mediocre product from the small local breweries in my town. The notion that esotericism can cover incompetence is the pinnacle of wishful thought.

If you properly (and I mean PROPERLY) sterilised the growler before filling it and seal it airtight, the beer should keep for about as long as bottled beer does (i.e. 6-9 months).

While beer won't 'spoil' in these conditions, it will inevitably go flat as carbon dioxide escapes, and oxidise, both of which are going to ruin the taste. Thus, I'd advise you to prolong freshness by buying growlers that are opaque or made of brown glass, and finish drinking as fast as possible.

Yeah, there are some great experimental beers that come through the tasting room.

From The Oxford Companion to Beer: "barley wine is the strongest of beers and while not always literally approaching the alcohol content of whine, usually surmounts the strength of ales referred to as "strong" and "old", to which they are related. The first beers we now think of as barley wines sprang from the British farmhouse tradition, often as beers brewed from the first runnings (strong worts) of multiple-brew single mashes, which were infused a number of times to yield worts of diminishing strength. This system is know as paratigyle and is still employed in some British breweries. Barley wines are often brewed to alcoholic strengths of 10% ABV, and sometimes more" There's a lot more to this entry.

Porters, stout, or Belgian ales don't use as much barley, at least in my brewing experience. You use some barley to get the reddish tones in darker ales, but you're relying much more heavily on the roasted malts to give color.

They also made a red IPA in collaboration with Karl Strauss Brewing that was fantastic. I'd be happy if any of those enter their regular lineup.

I'm in NYC and I've noticed Sip of Sunshine is becoming easier and easier to get so I guess it's becoming mainstream. A place by me has it on tap and I was at a random gas station a couple weeks ago and noticed they had a 4 pack sitting in the fridge....

I think Sip of Sunshine is the most over rated of the popular craft beers

Pic related: best beer I've ever had. Was impossible to get when the delicate fags on the left made them change the name so they didn't feel so triggered, pretty sure it was out of production for a while.

so, it's okay to drink them as cold as you want? i wouldn't want to destroy the flavor by over chilling it, but i don't like warm beer either.

what about the name made the left upset?

I just copy pastad this from an nbc article but basically the Indian community got a hard on once they noticed Gandhi in the name

> After weeks of outcry from the Indian-American community, the New England Brewing Company, makers of a best-selling craft beer named “Gandhi-bot,” has agreed to change the brew's name, a Connecticut state legislator told NBC News.

“They’ve given us a timeline of two to three months by which time everything will be complete,” said Prasad Srinivasan, after a meeting with the company last week. “They’ve already apologized and now they will change the name. That sounds reasonable to me.”

New England Brewing Company’s issued a statement on Thursday about the meeting. “After careful consideration we feel that renaming Gandhi-Bot is the right move (the beer will remain the same),” the release stated. “We have begun the process of renaming and rebranding this beer which may take up to three months. Taking these steps will allow us to express our support for the Indian-American community while also limiting any economic losses.”

Thank you all for contributing. I learned a lot and appreciate it. If I don't see a beer thread next time I'm bored on the internets, I'll make it.

i have nothing to compare it to, as i haven't had it warm before, but it's almost like drinking chilled, slightly carbonated whiskey.

i like it slightly chilled. barely cold enough to get the glass sweaty.
