Great question! I'm so glad someone asked. I also wondered if other anon's bought coffee beans online. A lot of connoisseurs were recommending HappyMug.com

I was skeptical at first. The prices were so low compared to more established places, but then I did more research. It soon became evident that with their direct-to-consumer model, with word of mouth advertising and no fancy "web 3.0 web design" (who needs that? LMAO!) they were able to keep costs down and pass the savings to you, the consumer! I mean us, the consumers! I am definitely just a satisfied customer!

Was it shipped from them or Amazon? What grinder/grind? Ratio? Water temp?

In your video, that's the pulse method (pour, drain, pour, drain, etc.). You lose heat in the grounds that way, which why some people don't like it. You can also try a steady pour.

There a couple problems I see with their technique, such as starting the pours on the edges. That water, especially at the beginning, is running right down the side past all the coffee. Pour along the edges to get that stuck stuff off when there is water in there, at least. The straight pouring in the center until they get up to their weight is also dumb. Keep your circles going to agitate everything all the time.

Also, you'll never get any new device right in two tries. More like two weeks

1:16 ratio. Water temp I have no clue. I only have a generic electric kettle. I boil the water, and then start the process shown in the video, beginning with the preheating, so the water is cooler by the time I'm finished around 2 min later. I'm not sure how to keep it consistent. I guess a steady pour would be better in that regard? So for that I just pour all of the water in one pour, in circles?

Not sure I have the proper vocabulary to accurately describe what exactly I'm tasting. I'm not getting any of the notes listed on the bag (brown sugar, cashew, pear), except maybe brown sugar, slightly. That's what I was hoping to be intensify with a better method.
I can say it's not unpleasant at all to drink, very smooth, no acidity at all. It's more than just "eh," at least in my opinion.

Well, the biggest way to change the taste in pourover is the grind. So try 7 clicks and then 9 and see which direction is better, finer or coarser. Just keep all of your other variables the same. Only ever change one variable at a time

The biggest thing to remember is:

bitter = over-extracted = grind is too fine
sour = under-extracted = grind is too coarse

>> No.9090305

>>9090282
Yea, usually, but basically always with pour over. Now, your grind could be perfect but your water temp could be too low or it didn't have enough contact time with the grounds. Those could also result in under-extraction.

The first part about the taste is universal, though
bitter = over-extracted
sour = under-extracted

Check for freshness by finding out the roast date, which should be on the bag or on the sign on the bin (if they happen to be loose beans). Typically beans should be used and purchased between 3-10 days after they're roasted. Of course you can buy them freshly roasted and wait a few days, but if the beans are more than 10 days old, they're stale. Coffee beans release gas after being roasted, which is why that 3-10 day critical period is there. Old beans aren't useless though, they can be used for cold brew, which is what most businesses do with them. Can't make a decent hot cup of coffee with them though.

Honestly, cold brew is so fucking easy im surprised more people dont do it. Heres my process for great cold brew:

1. Decent beans
2. Coarse grind (like halfway between coarse sea salt and table salt. On my grinder i do a 7 on a 1-9 scale where 1 is finest and 9 is coarsest)
3. In a large french press fill the bottom 1/4 to 1/3 with coffee grounds. Probably about 25-30grams.
4. Fill that bitch with filtered cold water. Stir immediately for about 10 seconds.
5. Plop the filter on but dont push the plunger down, leave in the fridge overnight (8-10hours) and push down when you wake up and enjoy.

Perfect everytime. Experiment with grind size and beans to grt what you like. Enjoy with ice.

First, get a damn scale and weigh everything. Second, if Google converted everything correctly, that's a 5:32 coffee:water ratio, which is more than twice what you want. Try a 1:16 ratio.

What they might have meant and somehow got misunderstood along the way is that if you grind flavored coffee then the flavoring can get into the grinder and result in all the coffee ground afterwards having the same flavor. For a better grinder than the $200 hand grinders you need to get into the large flats, like Ditting (804), Mahlkonig (EK43, Tanzania), or Compak (R80, R120). Cheapest you can do that for is around $500-$600 with a Bunnzilla.

Every other method of making coffee has felt inferior, taste wise, after I got a Bialetti Brikka stovetop coffee maker. Pour over, french press, espresso machine... just tastes worse.

Nothing better than getting freshly baked beans from your local coffee shop, something really dark and strong, making a 6x espresso and extending it to a latte with hot frothed milk and some caramel syrup. It's my go-to coffee drank.

Currently I am just working with a French press, are any of the above worth purchasing if I have limited space? The carafe seems like a great buy, so I could warm it and use it to store my four cups of French press I make so it doesn't stay with the grounds too long. I have a long neck brush, so it would be pretty easy to clean too.

I think you'd have to use a pressure canner for that, which would make it not a cold brew. Otherwise you might give your friend botulism. Probably shouldn't do that. You could soak them in vodka or another alcohol though.

Right I'd have to treat the beans before canning wouldn't I? Kind of only considered the water and jars. Could I bake them or something first? Maybe only make it 2-3 weeks? Any affordable and decent/good coffee beans you guys can recommend? For comparision I currently drink Mollbergs Blandning, it's a dark roast with low acidity (I'm not too fond of acidic coffee). This thread made me want to try out grinding my own coffee for my brewer to see if it makes a noticable difference in taste, and I'm currently waiting for my Wilfa WSCG-2 to arrive.

I probably unintentionally stepped on some thread landmines, but eh.

That might work but I think you'd need to make the liquid acidic if you aren't pressure canning, otherwise botulism. That's why people usually do it with vodka because it's foolproof. You could do a coffee flavored simple syrup if he doesn't drink alcohol, but it'd have to be refrigerated.

Damn. Should I just do a basic cold brew, put it in a jar, and tell him I did that? Honestly I just use instant because I'm 2poor for beans. I really don't know what I'm doing. I just want to make my buddy a gift.

>> No.9121650

>>9121637
Yeah that's probably a better idea. Buy some good coffee beans, use it to make cold brew and give it to him along with the rest of the beans. Ask him to try it and tell you if there's a big difference between hot/cold brew and which one he likes more. The cold brew should keep for a week or two if it stays refrigerated. Don't keep the beans in that long though, take them out once they're done extracting.
