And many restaurants love how things are, because they get to treat their wait staff like disposable tissue paper - which of course is why service is so god awful in anything below fine dining.

Statistics show better service doesn't actually garner better tips, and suggest that MAYBE certain demographics get tipped less for equal service/ticket (correlation not being causation of course).

Restaraunts that have experimented with giving their server staff an actual wage report promising results, but as long as tip reliance is cheaper and easier it won't happen.

Let me pre-face this by saying that I tip if the server did their job well, and by that I mean I use literally ONE criteria. My drink. My drink should never be empty, if you see it getting close you ASK me if I want more, you don't let it sit empty for 15 minutes you fucks.

At $5 a table and $2.63 an hour, that right there is $7.63 which is minimum wage.

Now, take into account that chances are you will have more than one table in an hour. Let's say on average you have 3 tables in an hour and they all tip $5 each.

So a waitress would make 5+5+5+2.63=17.63/hr and yet I see them whine all the time.

You make more money than people who work at McDonalds, Wendy's, WalMart, Target, Best Buy, etc.

When I was a dishwasher, I made minimum wage in my state (actually like $0.25 more but w/e).

The way the waitresses were paid seemed really fucked up to me. It was kind of complicated.

Their wage was like minimum wage minus a percentage of expected (not actual) tips, and then the state withheld income tax based on a percentage of tickets meant to represent average tips.

On a bad night, it was absolutely possible to make less than minimum wage. The wait staff used to hate all-you-can-eat ribs night because it attracted exactly the kind of people who don't tip, and they'd often net far less than minimum for the shift.

This was in the late 90's though. It may have changed.

You're required by law to make minimum wage. If your weekly earnings don't add up to minimum wage, then it's your boss's legal duty to pay you the difference. That would also indicate that you're a shit server.

Everybody knows that you're already making an average of $15 an hour because of the tipping system, which is much more than you deserve for such a brainless job.

rant to the system. Its just america being all ''you HAVE to tip us'. Im already overpaying for the food served to me in restaurants, I dont want to pay more because someone walks 10 meters to deliver me the food. Why dont I get extra money for JUST DOING MY JOB?

I honestly rather pay more for food than worry about what's the appropriate tip, $5 is usually the max since I'll probably be there for like an 30-40 minutes.
For me to tip anymore than that I would have to receive perfect service or the person serving would have too take something off the bill.

This whole tipping thing is just frustrating.
