You mean what WAS the point of breadsticks since they've completely vanished now. The point was probably to give you something to munch on that doesn't kill your appetite.

They used to be an appetizer similar to being like a cracker and used for dipping or topping before all places went to the soft, buttery- made with the same dough as everything else- style they use now to save money.
