OP, I agree with you though that Publix is the objectively correct place to shop for the staples of everyday living.

Just keep an open mind to those other places too. Walmart will be cheaper a lot of times because they are the great satan of logistics and putting mom and pop shops out of business. They are clearly very good at something. And keep whole foods, trader joes, and fresh market in mind as well. Their quality of product is far superior in some cases and they prices aren't as bad as people say - given the increase in quality.

publix is fine for the essentials. i get good eggs, milk, chicken and grains from there. decent wine selection.

but whole foods/fresh market have way better meat for pretty much the same price. and their butchers actually work in front of you and know sort of what they're talking about. better beer selection. their produce is usually more expensive, but they have a wider selection if you're into that sort of thing.

Distilled water $0.88 and it's $1.29 at the supermarket? That alone is worth the gas to me to drive there and back. Distilled water is a very big deal to me.

Eggs and milk are both cheap.

If you are looking for specialty items that are not too obscure, Publix will have them at a cheaper price. Since they pay a bit more then Wal-Mart, the employees are more likely to direct you to the correct location.

Really, though, it is their pre-made items that are key. For a grocery chain and for most regional chains, they make the best pre-made products.

I don't know if you like cereal bars but you should try the Whole Foods store brand. They make everyone else's cereal bars tasted like a bucket of puke, especially Kellogg's. And they're cheaper.

Is Publix really going downhill fast? I have worked at Winn Dixie for years (13 years 8 in meat) and recently had my position cut without a loss in pay or hours and was thinking of hopping ship to Publix. I always hear good things about the treatment of employees but it all seems a little starry eyed to me.

Sometimes I just don't wanna have to make three stops for my groceries, anon. Plus, my local Wegman's has a rather extensive international cheese and butter section. Also I live in a temperate climate as the presence of Wegmans' implies, so going to a farmers market isn't an option for the majority of the year.

The process is starting . We still have a huge surplus of cash in the company and have been exploring other avenues of business , ie buying commercial real estate , but our rapid expansion up north has been stirring the bees nest company wide. It's not the same company it was 20, 15 heck 5 years ago. The kool aid has lost its flavor to alot of people now. Still I would rather work at Publix than Winn Dixie by a long shot.
