I'm a musician who had a little success just over a decade ago. Managed to buy a small apartment in a still unfashionable (but quickly changing) part of the borough. Cost me what a nice place out in the sticks would. Big difference is this place has already doubled in value since I bought it. And given that I see more and more folks around here who look like OP pic I'm guessing it will again before too long.

If you wanted to move here I'd say save your money and buy a modest place somewhere that's next to a gentrifying neighborhood, but not yet on the radar for most people. Right now that would be Bensonhurst or Gravesend. Total backwaters. Almost as far away from Williamsburg as you can get, but close to Bay Ridge, which is cool and a half hour subway ride to LES/Chiinatown in Manhattan.

Or if you really wanted to pioneer it (and have your neighbors be living Old Brooklyn cliches) you can still find nice apartments in Gerritsen Beach and Marine Park for $120k or less.

That certainly helps. I work from home myself. When I do have a client, I am capable of prettying myself up. It means tying the hair back and hiding under the collar, and oiling the beard into a manageable point. A long sleeve shirt covers the tattoos. As a software developer that deals with the people I visit on site via phone for months before the actual visit, they usually have some idea that I'm a laid back guy, and no one has ever expressed a concern. I got another raise today, so I must be doing something right.

>hipster

“Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.

It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).

You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That’s because you don’t use “hipster” to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.

The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.

Depends on the deployment of a term. I live in NYC, and there are absolutely an identifiable "hipster" subculture of people with shared aesthetic and leisure preferences who live in particular geographic areas.

Like any other subculture, it's basically defined by a pattern of consumption, and while it's not totalizing (in the late-capitalist information age where people can adopt and discard signifiers of different subcultures primarily by changing their consumption habits, subcultural totalization is largely a thing of heh past) it definitely exists as a social phenomena.

On the internet, it might be deployed relationally, as you suggest, but that doesn't invalidate the ability to group these people (who do have strikingly similar patterns of behavior) by certain subcultural elements

I was actually part of that music scene in the EV and Williamsburg in the early 2000's. So while people used the term hipster in a pejorative way to describe guys with bedhead wearing tight thrist store suits and Converse these were people for whom I had a great affection. They were fans. I'm incapable of seeing the term hipster in a negative light. I see it as a term of affection, since it's almost always applied to my kind of people by the kind of folks who find avocados threatening.

For the longest time, I also just assumed "hipster" to be a catch-all for alternative livestyles that the mainstream didn't understand, such as veganism, independent music, backpacking, straight edge etc. It certainly didn't help that I often even heared goths and emos being referred to as hipsters. I thought that the stereotype of a twentysomething white male with little muscle mass or body fat wearing flannel shirts, flat caps and tunnel earrings was nothing but a stereotype. But then I saw one. It was like a cardboard cutout from a picture on the internet. And he acted in exactly the way that hipsters are supposed to act.

Your post is one of the most educated ones I've seen on this board, but don't underestimate the power of meme marketing magic. You can make up an umbrella term, or even worse, a marketing target group, and people will start to identify with it and perpetuate the cliches. They will become real life examples of made up memes. It is one of the scariest things I've ever seen happen.

I remember the first time I heard the term hipster in its modern usage. It was in 2001, and a buddy of mine was all upset someone had called him a hipster. I immediately got the meaning. This dude was rock and roll skinny and wore really tight clothes. He was about 23 and had moved from a wealthy suburb to a super crappy East Village apartment. He worked a job he didn't really like just so he could go out every night to see live music from bands like Chrome Cranks, Blond Redhead, Modest Mouse and the Strokes. There were suddenly a lot of guys like him walking around the East Village and Williamsburg at the turn of the century. The term branched out to include beardy food obsessed types a few years later. But its initial use was directed to white kids who moved to the city in their young 20's to live a specific sort of rock and roll lifestyle that involved shitty apartments, lots of cheap beer and obsessively following the last gasp of the NYC live rock and roll scene.

I used to live in a small northern "city", which meant I was exposed to hipsters later on, maybe 2010 or 2011.

I thought they were effeminate try-hards and wondered about the psychology of following a fad and what your peers were doing to such a high degree of conformity, but whatever, fads always come and go.

That said, I have to say that hipsters overall have cultivated a higher appreciation for better food. Bacon and fusion everything aside, their takes on diner foods, donuts, cakes, sandwiches, etc. usually are quite good. From my experience anyway.

When they've grown up and/or morphed into the next fad, we'll be left with a population that is influenced by this food awareness and accessibility. It was already coming due to the Food Network popularity and increase in cooking and eating interest by the general public, but they helped cultivate it.

That's my take on it.

I still remember going to a party at my sister's house and being face-to-face with hipsters for the first time. I'm a pretty genuine person, so it took a little longer to figure out that a lot of them were literally saying anything just to seem cool, ironic, and basically fit into the mold they chose to fill.

I was talking about hunting with someone and he started going on about knowing your food source etc, then mentioned abattoirs. I knew nothing about abattoirs and engaged in a conversation about this, and eventually he casually remarked that he likes going to abattoirs because of the name and it seems cooler than the supermarket.

I was mildly shocked at such blatant superficiality: he wasn't joking at all either.

Also, when my gf and I walked inside we literally thought they were all gay. It was pretty funny looking back.

That very much plays into the two Americas thing I posted earlier. People who choose to move to the city because they are interested in good food, culture, going out to brunch, music and generally feeling like they're on the forefront of social change are very different from those who see urban areas as dirty dangerous shitholes full of undesirable people and pretentious fucktards. Some people want to feel like they're embracing the new - they enjoy being part of what they view as a better set of standards. To others the very idea of playing around with the standards is silly at best and horrifying at worst.

It was interesting to witness the first few times. Obviously I'd seen lots of people trying to be cool while growing up, I probably tried as a kid too.

But to see people in their mid-20s cultivated an image, mentality, self, whatever that is centered around this was disturbing.

One guy, a level 75 uber hipster, said he used to be a jock and "had to make up for lost time" (interpret that as you will).

As I said before, I'm a genuine person. That doesn't mean I'm 100% honest or perfect of course, but when I express myself it is invariably an un-self-counscious reflection of who I am. I don't understand these people... it can't all be subconscious, I mean they must go to a story and actively try to emulate that style and say things that everyone else says, etc.

It must be incredibly boring and tiring. Pursuing conformity under the guise of coolness and, inexplicably, individuality and self-expression is lost on me. I wasn't even like this when I was in the eighth grade, let alone a 25-year-old man.

And some people keep up with it. You see them in their mid-30s with kids, still keeping up appearances. Most fads (goths, skaters, 90s stoner, etc.) involve impressionable teenagers looking for an identity and sense of rebellion, so they eventually go away and the adherents basically grow up. Hipsterism involves people in their 20s and 30s, so I wonder if these people will move on to something else.

I suppose it is a perfect fad for a generation that is, generally speaking, incredibly self-absorbed, dependent, and suffering from a Peter Pan complex.

I addressed it directly in another thread, but the idea came up in the discussion about beards earlier here. People who work a typical 9 to 5 in an office or job site accept a specific set of standards when it comes to appearance, priorities, schedule and the like. People in the gig economy and those who work for start ups have more leeway when it comes to priorities and appearance. The artisan butcher who cures his own charcuterie isn't going to look or think like the office worker in the suburbs. They're going to have very different sets of values and priorities. They live in different realities.

Of course, but what interests me isn't the differences in style, because that is the nature of style, rather the level of conformity under the guise of individuality.

I suppose the same can be said about the office workers too; they tend to dress the same and many of them probably invest some sense of self-identity in their clothing and style.

But the hipster archetype seems to be about quirky individuality, yet it is essentially conforming to the crowd and adjusting accordingly.

Essentially, they've created their own business attire and expectations. It may look more modern, free, and eclectic, but it still revolves around the norms and opinions of their peers.

The true artisan hipsters who are creating a sort of revival in their craft are to be commended, I just wonder why these creative individuals feel compelled to follow the social expectations of their peers with respect to dress and mannerisms.

I am sort of oblivious to my own style and have virtually no interest in that aspect of self-expression. But to see adults cultivate a new fad and image under the guise of individuality is interesting and I wonder about the psychology.

We don't live in a vacuum, but if we removed all influences it isn't like hipsters would independently find this manner of style and action because it is a close reflection of their self.

Then again, maybe more adults follow fads and such than I am aware of, it's just that hipsters are more evident because their style is more obvious to me than some fashion labels or whatever that I wouldn't be able to identify. This is probably closer to the truth.

Are people so stupid they'll willingly post with misspelled words because they can't be arsed to do a ten second google search? Seriously, though, Americans have been buying into health based food fads for over a century. Breakfast cereal came from Seventh Day Adventest sanitariums in the Midwest where the idea that a vegetarian diet and abstaining from coffee could cure most ills. Olive oil gained in popularity because people got scared of animal fats in the 70's and 80's. A similar fear of carbs before that led to people eating cottage cheese as a "diet" food. The point is most Americans have no idea how they ought to be eating, so they look for some magic bullet, whether it's consuming "superfoods" or avoiding gluten. They just want one simple solution to their questions about what eating healthy means. Hope is stronger than rationality.

Seriously, you gotta be a real fuckin' retard to still be going on about "hipsters" based on fashion trends from pre 2010. Like holy shit, do you go outside even? Do you know what people in metropolitan areas even look like in the last 10 years?

>I'm not a hipster
-not a hipster

>I'm a hipster
-not a hipster

Check out Asian markets. I bought mine from a Chinese grocery store. If they have a meat section they might have heads, if not ask them if they do. I paid $5 for the whole head and there was a lot of meat on there, just the tongue was removed as they sell it separately.

By the end of March I will do another offal thread as I just come across an ingredient I wanted to try for cooking and I think it's only available in the country I'm currently traveling in.

it is fairly popular, not mainstream though. there's a taco/burrito/hotdog place near me with all asian fillings. Thai peanut chicken, korean beef, char siu pork belly, Chinese sweet sausage instead of hotdogs, with a ton of asian toppings. pretty good drunk food.

It means my background put me in the position to have a pretty cool life without having to bust my ass, and I could avoid consequences of doing things that would fuck up people not in such a position. I'm a tall white guy with a prep school then Ivy education. The few brushes I've had with law enforcement I've managed to talk my way out of, even though in two cases they'd caught me committing a felony. More than once I've been hired for a job by virtue of being the only candidate to show up to show up in a properly fitting suit. My workday yesterday consisted of getting paid a lawyer's per hour rate to sit around drinking beer trading stories about rock stars. That is privilege.

I still don't understand the concept. We do not have this "privilege" in my country. Americans are strange.

In most countries people from prominent political and business families have opportunities others don't. And they're more likely to have law enforcement look the other way when they misbehave. The same thing happens with celebrities. In America we just have a few more unspoken tiers to that sort of thing based around race and social class (although we like to pretend social class doesn't exist).
