I always ask waiters how to pronounce stuff. I don't care if I look dumb. I'd rather know and look dumb.

I also never know what to put sauces on. Like, I go to an Indian place sometimes and get like 3 sauces on the side. I feel dumber asking about that than pronunciation. But I do think that people are happy to explain stuff to you. I mean, how would you know? You don't speak Thai or Vietnamese or whatever.

At my local Viet place I get a 2c and 14c and couldn't even tell you the first letter of the Vietnamese name on the menu. I just know it's the spring roll and Vegge vermicelli noodle dish. 2c and 14c. All I gotta say. It's just gonna be that easy.

You can just hold the menu up, point at the dish to the waiter, give a confident nod and set it back down. It makes you seem like the strong, silent, autistic type

I've never heard any waiter pronounce bruschetta properly. I've even had them repeat their crappy wrong pronunciation after I order it correctly, like an autocorrect by habit. LOL.

OP, just say, I'll have the chicken, and point, and then shut the menu like you just don't give a damn. Anything you need to know that you're too embarrassed to ask can be handled on google on your phone, from wtf the recipe is and if it contains anchovies or things you hate, or how to say it. I often quick google off a wine list just to see some ratings and what might be priced better, or try to figure out wtf kind of fish is the "basa" fish fry so I figure out if I want some toxic low cost sam's club toxin-filled fish farmed in the most polluted river in the world (mekong delta).
