What impresses you more when you go over to someone's house for a meal?

>expensive 'look at me' ingredients
or
>the innovative and unusual techniques they use to prepare cheap ingredients

Not OP, but well, duh. If you are so happy and content and have so many other things going for you that you don't strive to impress people with fancy cooking, good for you, but that's not reality for most of us.

These things are not connected. And yes, if the principal value you receive from social interaction and dinners is in the form of impressing or being impressed upon, you should re-evaluate your relationships. There is no pot of gold on top of the social ladder. Only more ladders.

Then I say as a professional chef that price is not a good indicator of taste, and obscurity only loosely correlates to novelty value and experience and not at all with price. Many very good meals don't live on because of taste, but they have a novelty factor and creative element that makes them interesting.

well executed _basic_ meals like pasta or meat and veg.

i don't think i've had anyone try to impress me with fancy ingredients. the closest would be when someone turns up to a bbq with rib fillet and gives it to the host with that shit eating grin because it's impossible to fuck up and everyone will say how good it tastes compared to the $4/kg sausages.
