what is a really good toaster that doesn't pop up? i'm looking for one that does not scare me at the end of every toast cycle.

You're looking for a "toaster oven", OP. I'd suggest one with a broiler setting.

Put it on the toast setting and dial the timer back. Watch it the first couple times and you should know the settings needed to sufficiently toast without burning fairly easily.

it's not that i'm afraid of my toaster. i just hate the anticipation of the toaster popping up.

Hey come on, he didn't say it was the pop-up that bothered OP, he said it was the anticipation. A toaster oven would be up your alley, OP, but they make a very loud and startling "DING!" At the end of the cook cycle.
