Not at all, and it's always different in the US, but with two common factors. Fresh italian sausage in the US is pork, and will feature the flavor of fennel. That fennel spice with its anise-y licorice-y deliciousness, clearly separates it from many other paprika heavy or differently spiced sausages, whether mild and sweet brats or chorizo, probably the two other sold fresh sausages outside of kielbasa and smoked sausages. Americans are used to every brand being a little different, and will refer to the producers name rather than just the style if it matters to them.

The USDA actually has specs for what an Italian sausage is. It's fresh sausage made of either beef or pork sand may be seasoned with hot red peper. If it's labeled Italian style sausage it may contain anise or fennel, Italian type of cheese or three of the following: basil, garlic, olive oil, marjoram or oregano.Tomato and other unexpected ingredients are allowed as long as specified on the label.

This is the government standard for what can be called Italian sausage in the US. It's not that Americans aren't familiar with sausages common in Italy. And you can get them here. But "Italian sausage" is a specific thing in America.

It could maybe, just maybe, be argued that the Americans were the most important nation through Lend Lease in WWII.

The idea that America was in any way important in WW1 is laughable. They spent most of the war selling supplies to both sides, joined the war when it was almost over and even then their soldiers needed to use French guns and artillery because the American army was that undersupplied. In fact, the French and British initially only wanted the Americans to fill the gaps in their own military, and only accepted otherwise after Pershing threw a temper tantrum. This actually turned out to be disadvantageous to the war, as the Americans suffered a huge number of casualties simply because their generals used strategies that the French and British had discovered weren't really effective... in 1914.

In WW1 America was a mere sideshow. It's said history is written by the victors, but considering how much France's achievements in WW1 are undervalued and how America's meagre role is blown out of proportion I'm starting to doubt that.
