What are some good low calorie dressings? Maybe something I can make?

I made this salad today but wasn't sure what to put on it. I'm trying to watch my figure, which complicates things.

I go to soy sauce and/or fish sauce dressings for no-oil dressings.

Simplest soy sauce dressing would be soy sauce and minced garlic. You can add chopped cilantro and ginger if you want too.

I like fish sauce ones with some sweetener like honey or palm sugar, some chilli, some sweet vinegar like red wine vinegar, and maybe some garlic as well. You can then add mint or cilantro if you want and maybe some lime.

To be honest, I don't think those would go well with fruit salads though. You might want to look into just some nice, sweet balsamic vinegar.

That sounds interesting, how much minced garlic per unit of soy sauce? Or you just kind of wing it?

Yeah I have a balsamic vinegar dressing that I use basically every day but I'm wearing it out.

This is what I normally use. 20 calories per two tablespoons so not too bad. But im wearing it out using it on everything.

(Sorry it uploads sideways)

How low-cal we talkin' here?
I routinely have salad because that's how I was raised. They never exceed 100 calories per serving for me.
>get a litre/quart sized container
>fill the fucker with salad greens
>1tsp or so of oil
>squirt of american-style mustard
>half tsp or so of vinegar
>sprinkle with salt
>lid the container and shake the ever loving fuck out of it until the oil, vinegar and mustard have combined into a dressing, coating the greens
>eat
That's it.

You actually want a little oil to help you metabolize some of the mega nutrition in that pile of vegetables.

Start with basic vinaigrettes. Paste up some garlic, smashing a clove with salt with the side of your knife, whisk into that optionally either an egg yolk or a tsp of dijon mustard, hit it with some lemon juice, lime juice, vinegar of choice (vary it from champagne to red wine to rice vinegar), and then some oil. Copious handful of salt and pepper and chopped herbs.

There ya go, basic dressing. Vary the fat from walnut oil to sesame oil to olive. The key is that you then toss the salad in dressing, or serve it on the side and dip your fork tines into it. This is how you use the least amount of it.

Keep dressing in a shakeable container to use a couple days in the fridge.

Low fat favorite bought dressings include: makoto ginger, marie's lemon vinaigrette, and bolthouse farms avocado dressings. All are fantastic things that would take more work to make at home.

That sounds like a really good idea! I'm going to try that tonight! Thank you. I should shake up more of my salads like that to get the dressing more distributed.

>>8084937
This is so helpful, thank you! I'm going to try the homemade recipe and try the low fat store bought ones.

Balsamic is the go-to for any salad. Love that stuff.

How do people enjoy salads?
>Put fruit in it
>Now it's full of sugar
>Put dressing on it
>Now it's coated in oil and fat
>Add cheese
>Same fucking deal
Everything that has the potential to make salad taste good is bad for you. Salad isn't inherently good, which is why I'll never understand the vegetarian way of eating. How the fuck do you deal with eating lettuce and tomatoes all the fucking time when it tastes like shit?
You have to coat a salad in shit that DOES taste good (cheese, fruit, dressing, etc) but isn't good for you, just to eat something that tastes like shit but IS good for you.

No wonder americans are so fat. Throw a bunch of fruit together with some cheese and a few lettuce leaves and they think they are some health freak.

I'm afraid I just wing it. I would probably say one clove to maybe 2tbsp of soy sauce though.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that minced onion is also very nice in the soy sauce.

Yeah, sucks when I order in a restaurant and they don't have balsamic (rare but does happen).

>>8084956
Well I make sure not to go over my daily serving of sugar. Too much sugar is bad, but, the rest of the day I'll have barely any. Breakfast was no sugar and dinner is always really light and certainly no sugar then.

>>8084958
I'm not a chef but it was pretty tasty. Any recommendations to improve it?

My bmi is now 19.5 so I'm getting there family!

Straight good quality balsamic by itself can make any salad delicious

>> No.8084991

Soy sauce, honey, sesame oil, minced garlic and a dash of lemon juice or vinegar

Works a charm. Obviously use less of the sesame oil and honey depending on how paranoid if calories you are

Lose the cheese. Less/no fruit, more veg. Try to explore all the different kinds of lettuces and other greens there are. And just because it's a salad doesn't mean that you need to stick to raw vegetables, and it also doesn't mean that you even need lettuce. Try adding some cauliflower, green beans, and so on.

Also, try adding some spices like cumin, turmeric, coriander. Try mustard dressings - Dijon mustard is a classic, but you can even try English mustard, horseradish, wasabi, Chinese mustard, even American yellow mustard.

I think you are confusing the work "healthy" and "good for you" as meaning just the fat cals or something. Although it is indeed true you can turn a salad into a meal that contains an entire day's worth of calories due to toppings, and then you can also compare the calories in a #1 Big Mac meal to a salad bar salad with protein on top, cheese, sour cream, the Works! and say "it's the same thing" but it's really not. There's a lot of nutrition in vegetables, as well as beans, cheeses, dressings, etc.

Nutrition and things being healthier or more "good" refers to vitamins, amino acids, omega fatty acids, enzymes and fiber, including the different types of fiber. so it's not exactly the same now, is it? And people who like loaded salads are not at all on the same level as vegetarians. They just like all foods and try to consume a variety. A salad doesn't have to be punishment food. I'm sorry you don't like them, even simply salads, but a lot of people do even when quite simple or low calorie. I'm from the South. We love vineripe tomatoes sliced with just salt and pepper as a side. We'll shuck some little purple hulled peas, and simmer them until tender and have that as a side, doesn't even need ham in it.

hummus , make it yourself and dont add alot of oil
salsa
vinegar

>> No.8085052

reminder that grilled or baked meats are good to add to salads too
you dont have to just eat vegetables to be healthy
if you arent eating straight up shit every day all day then its no problem to add stuff with some sugar such as dressing or fruit
and nothings wrong with a little dairy either
