Alton has never even worked in a restaurant, let alone ran the kitchen. Thus he's not a chef at all.

Did you perhaps mean "cooks"?

From Wiktionary:

Definition 3: "any cook."

Usage notes

When used in reference to a cook with no sous-chefs or other workers beneath him, the term connotes a certain degree of prestige—whether culinary education or ability—distinguishing the chef from a “cook”.

Alton Brown has both culinary education and prestige.

Dont be a definition autist. Words can have multiple meanings.

He isn't a chef. He is a director. He started out doing music videos and then moved into television. He thought there weren't any good food shows when he was evaluating the market, so he went to culinary school to train up and started what would become Good Eats.

He's a documentarian turned TV personality, not a chef.

White, who made his name at Harveys in Wandsworth, south London, claimed that Ramsay "cracked" after a particularly fearsome rebuke.

White said: "He had been a protégé at Harveys and he was always a hard worker and showed tremendous resilience when it came to my bollockings. He never cracked. Or rather, he never cracked until his final night at Harveys.

"I don't recall what he'd done wrong but I yelled at him and he lost it.

Gordon crouched down on the floor in the corner of the kitchen, buried his head in his hands and started sobbing. 'I don't care what you do to me,' he said as he wept. 'Hit me. I don't care. Sack me. I don't care.' I was hardly going to sack him; he was leaving the next day - I'd got him a job working for Albert Roux at Gavroche."

I was really enjoying this until he put the poop/digestive tract contents into the stock

but also whole shrimp alongside the prepared one

and then two extra helpings of salt when his seasoning mix was mainly salt

>we'll add some bay leaves, three or four
>throws in about seven

I bet it was delicious but this didn't make much sense to me. He had time to prepare everything before ever going on camera.

Bullying is stupid.
His book is stupid.
He's stupid. Let's not keep idolizing him. You can judge a person by their children, nuff said.

>Steven Raichlen
Yup, he's a smartie.

I grew up on The Frugal Gourmet and early on PBS chefs. Sara Moulton from Gourmet, had that Cooking Live show which some of the best James Beard winning peeps across the lands showcasing their signature recipes. Not sure why they don't replay those, except her suzy homemaker sweet personality might not be "cool" enough, but her knowledge was sound and classical.

Are you sure about that? Wasn't just coursework to be in a kitchen somewhere during the program? I don't think Alton was ever a chef (or even a cook). He was a film guy and small film educator, who only got the cooking degree for the credibility to his current line of work at the time, which was educational (grant-funded) TV. It was a calculated move to get the next step in funding. I heard him speak in D.C. at Olssen's bookstore and 95% of the bookreading/booksigning crowd were mac geeks wanting filming tips and secrets (which very much annoyed him). He was considered pretty innovative with the fridge and oven camera angles, I guess, so I'm guessing he was NOT the set genius around those stunts personally to be kind of irritated that no one asked him food questions.

Pretty sure you got jebaited
What are the odds someone starts a "best chef" thread with the one food personality that has actively gone out of their way to make it clear they are not technically a "chef"
