-with those results in hand, DNA samples are ordered.

I hate to say it, but possibly. It depends on the workers and the place. I've never spit in peoples food even ones who are being jerks, mainly because I'm a pussy and walk around with guilt even when i don't do things. Another completely unrelated tip, but never EVER eat a salad or things with fresh cut veggies that isn't cooked first.

One place years ago I started at they upgraded me to pasty chef (not a chef at all), I had to ask one of the guys where the tongs or mixing spoons were for a salad i had come in, the dude tells me we usually just do this as he proceeds to stick his hand directly in the salad mixing it up with the dressing, then washing them afterwards. This place was fine dining.

This story is much worse and scared me for life. More recently I was working at a bar and grill, the resteraunt itself looked clean, the kitchen not so much. A guy was chopping diced onions for the salad, slices his finger fairly bad, lots of blood. The guy tries to go home and the mananger says nah we need you now, just work through your shift. Guy proceeds to bleed forever all over the cutting board and still prepping all the rest of the vegetables. This guy was a junky too, so possible hep or worse.. I was so fucking scared of eating anything uncooked in a resteraunt ever since.

I've never spit in food in my years at restaurants. My dad never spit in food in 20 years of food service either. I believe there is nothing more sacred than a person's food. Few years back in my town somewhere in Yourop there were a bunch of dickheads working in McDonalds who put their cum in the milkshake container. They got caught and THEY got sued, not the restaurant. Never heard of incidents like that ever since.

Worked at a bar for roughly three years. One of those gigs where being the bartender means you're also the waiter some days, and also the fry cook some other days. Hell, I worked every job except the bowling alleys. Anyway, in my three years, not once have I seen bodily fluids, floor flavor, or other kinds of tampering with meals. Our clientele are generally nicer to the waitstaff and kitchen crew than the bartenders...mostly because the bartenders handle drinks AND gambling; thus, if the bartender hands you four $20s worth of garbage tickets, they're going to start treating you like shit. Other hand, there's no helping frozen crab cakes.

Been working as a waiter for 4 years now, and I've only spit in someone's food once before, but that was because the guy had spit in my face so I was kind of paying him back. I actually felt bad afterwards though because he apologized at the end and said he'd been having a really bad day, and left a huge tip to try to make up for it. I never admitted to him that I spat in his food though.

Working for a year in fast food, I only ever knew of one single customer getting spit in their food. He was a regular, usually ordered the same thing and used expired online coupons he'd saved to his laptop. He would cause a huge scene if you didn't accept them, and we didn't care enough for most customers to be strict about it.

Because he always brought his laptop in to use the coupons, and then sat in the far corner of the store for hours on our wi-fi with his laptop, he was known as Laptop Guy.

Laptop Guy was rude, disgusting, and harassed people in the store. If he wasn't happy with his discount fast food meal he wouldn't come to the counter, he would yell across the entire store. One of my supervisors would see him, and since we knew his order they would go to the back immediately and spit between the two leaves of lettuce for his burger.

After a particularly bad incident I just refused to let him use any of his saved coupons and eventually convinced him to leave the store. My manager congratulated me on it.

Worst things I did to rude customers were in the morning I would give extremely rude regulars decaf instead of regular, and wouldn't top off drinks in drive-thru. Just little petty stuff, but it made 8 hours of serving the worst of humanity slightly more bearable.

There's also a reverse side to the issue, I also always made sure that nice customers got the best available food and service.

What is so hard to understand about tipping culture in the US?

Most food service workers are paid less than minimum wage (sometimes as low as $2.13 an hour) with the expectation that tips will make up the difference. It's essentially a way for employers to screw their employees and keep more money.
Is it wrong? Yes. Should waitstaff be paid a minimum wage? Yes. But as long as the service was good, what is wrong with giving a nominal tip? Two or three dollars on a $15 meal is not asking too much. You'd just be paying that on the food, if not more, if the workers were paid fairly.

Tipping is not mandatory, but it is frowned upon if you do not tip when your server is actually making an effort.

I have refused to tip on occasion, because I received poor service. The last time I remember doing this was when the waiter failed to bring us the right drinks twice in a row, could not remember our orders, and never checked on us during the meal. He also took half an hour to bring us our check and overall was inattentive and sloppy.
