Do you mean BARBECUE barbecue or just cooking out-of-doors over open flame barbecue?
Whichever it is, aubergines are a good choice.

So which one do you mean?

Barbecuing is long indirect-heat cooking meant to impart a heavier smoky taste to the food whilst simultaneously cooking it. What you're doing is shorter, direct-heat cooking which picks up some, but not much, of a smoky taste.

As for potatoes on the embers, I did that just last week. All you do is scrub the potatoes clean under running water and wrap them in foil. That's it. Onto the embers and you're good to go. If you want, you can add salt or butter or this, that or the other thing, but I just save all that for after it's cooked.

Whenever I barbecue ribs or chicken or something, I always cook some potatoes that way at the end.

Other direct-heat cooking things people haven't mentioned yet:
• cauliflower
• pumpkins/hard-skinned squashes
• asparagus
• peaches
>fucking love peaches glazed with lavender syrup and butter as they cook out there
• corn, duh
• cabbage/brussels sprouts
• leeks
>just split lengthways, wash well, pat dry, brush with oil and sprinkle with salt then slap'em onto the grill
>alternately, put several of them into a foil packet with the oil and salt and cook on the embers
Either way, they're great with some bell pepper sauce to dip them in (ask for recipe).
• doughballs
>just skewer and steam until set, then brush with oil and cook on the grill
Once off, you can brush more oil on them and sprinkle with whatever seasoning you'd like
• eggs
>sounds weird, but works nicely: buy a plastic egg-holder then carefully make a hole in some eggs just large enough to remove their tasty goo to a bowl, afterwhich, you'll beat this goo with curry paste or whatever other things you like and carefully pour back into the eggs, put the eggs into the egg holder and steam until set before, finally, skewering and finishing the eggs in their shells on the grill
Hope this helps.
