What kind of meat thermometers does /ck/ use? I have used some cheapies, but I'm never confident. Does anyone use wireless technology and leave it in the meat during grilling?

I've got a digital probe thermometer I bought a few years at the supermarket for like $10.

Can program it to go off after a set amount of time or a set temperature. Works fine.

Can you hear it beep in the oven?

I use a Lavatools Javelin instant read. It gets a pretty accurate read within a few seconds unless you're trying to measure oil temp or something else 250+ degrees, in which case it takes maybe 5-7 seconds to get a good reading. It is totally suitable for my purposes and I don't feel the need to upgrade to anything pricier.

I have an oven thermometer and a candy thermometer. I've never cooked meat.

My candy thermometer. It's nice.

Oven is a cheap analog.

I have a Lavatools Javelin, it works really well. Maybe not as accurate as some really high end ones, but for around 20 bucks it reads in just a few seconds and has led to some perfectly done meat. Eventually it would be nice to have one of those ones you can leave in while it cooks though, but this gets the job done cheap

I use one of these, but instead of the probe that comes with it (because the handle can melt) I have a thermocouple with just the wire.
You can literally stick it in the meat, shut the oven door, and leave it in there. It's fantastic.

I use the CDN DTP392 for meat, oil and sugar. The probes are a bit shitty though, they last me a year or two but I don't use them with a grill which really kills them fast.

If you want to use it with a grill (can get a lot hotter than the oven) you'll need something like this :

An actual thermocouple like you'd find on a boiler or gas water heater? Am I missing something?

I use the force.

This temperature gun is great. Only $14 and it works almost instantly.
