Intercultural differences thread? Great.

Riddle me this, why is it that when I go to any country outside Eastern Yurop it becomes a fucking pain in the ass to find fresh, good quality bread?

No buns, no toast shit, no baguettes, or those hideous things in plastic bags, just plain, regular bread. Here you can get decent bread even in tiny ass shops in the middle of nowhere. So why can't the more civilized part of the world into making bread?

i'm not unique in that i'm learning chinese and i watch anime.
i've found chinese characters(hanzi) are almost universally more intricate than japanese characters (kanji, katakana, hiragana)
chinese usually looks like it has to be done slowly and carefully, but japanese looks hastily drawn.

desu just look at the same article on wikipedia. once in chinese, once in japanese. spend about 5 minutes(for each language) and you'll probably never forget the difference.

The one and two stroke characters are mostly kana. They have no inherent meaning and just transcribe sound. Chinese has no kana, and while it does have some simple one or two stroke characters, you rarely see a long row of them together.

The bottom right Kitkat says bu-re-n-do with the four simple looking characters, and transcribes the english word blend. The complex looking characters on their right are kanji, probably words for different fruit. Chinese people could read it easily enough, but the pronunciations are different.

The best way to tell jap and chink apart is that chinese characters are typically over designed boxes that are doing way too much at once, and jap characters are laid back and calm.

Another way to go about it is to ask a kid to write a word in chinese, because 9/10 times what they draw will look identical to chink script. Meanwhile jap is more like what you would get by swinging the pen like a pendulum while rotating the page.

All in all, if its complex its chinese, if its simple its japanese, and if it looks like a bunch of o's and t's its korean.

Even common Chinese vs. Japanese fonts bear out what anon is saying, even if hanzi and kanji are essentially the same (keeping simplified vs. traditional silliness in mind). Japanese print fonts do not tend to emphasize line thickness variations (implying stroke direction) as much as Chinese fonts do.

Anecdotally, my native Taiwanese friend who studied Japanese with me used to say typical Japanese handwriting always looked rushed compared to even messy Chinese handwriting, and he guessed that it was because Japanese kids start with kana whereas Chinese kids learn proper spacing from the very start.
