1) Social isolation. Sharing meals is a fundamental bonding ritual in every society. Observant Jews follow strict dietary rules that pretty much keep them from getting too chummy with non Jews. 3. Proselytizing. Many vegans encourage those around them to go vegan. Generally the only people who enjoy being preached to are those who already agree with the preacher. Everybody else finds this shit annoying.

4. Special snowflake-ism. Being vegan is turning your back to the status quo. Throughout history those rich enough to eat meat and dairy ate as much of each as they could afford. In the Western world eating beef in particular is widely considered a symbol of success - it's part of our culture. Being vegan is turning your back to part of your culture. It's like not watching TV, not owning a car, not following sports or being an atheist. You're choosing not to participate in something most of your peers think is wonderful. Anyone who chooses to be different will draw some flak, because nobody likes a special snowflake.

5. Vegans are threatening. Cheeseburgers are delicious. So are steaks. Entertaining the idea that vegans might be right for even a second is a direct threat to beloved foods that are part of our culture.

Oh, I agree with you there. I just think that going vegan isn't the only way of avoiding industrial factory farming. For example, you can simply eat LESS meat instead of no meat. And the meat you do eat can come from free-ranged happy animals rather than something that's been crammed in a cage all its life. Not all meat comes from factory farms. And an animal which was raised on a traditional-style farm and then is slaughtered has a much better life (and quicker death) than one living in the wild only to die via a predator, starvation, or old age.

But most vegans I know cook because they have to. How does it negatively impact an animal to kill it painlessly and instantly? The only way is if they can somehow anticipate the death, and it causes them existential suffering. Most animals are not capable of that. There may be some that are (dolphin, octopus, primates, etc.).

In fact, it may REDUCE the amount of suffering of an animal if they are raised for eating and killed instantly/painlessly. It is conceivable that you could raise a little piggy and give it an awesome life, something much better than it would be likely to get in the wild. And then you could kill it with a bullet or something else that does the job instantly. That's a death with much less suffering than it would be likely to get in the wild.

It's so odd that veggies focus on the killing rather than the living (often times at least).
