Went to Japan for work in June.
Ate mostly at sushi go rounds, ramen shops, and 7/11. (Worked weird hours)
Go to a downtown area and just eat what ever looks and smells good, and if its busy.

and get some Okonomiyaki. Fucking good stuff.

Oh, and as high tech as Japan is there are still quite a few restaurants and sushi bars that only take cash. Don't be like me and eat a ton of sushi at a go round bar and then not have money to pay for it.
Oh and not all ATMs take non Japanese cards.

Don't live your life so close-minded.
I grew up in a place similar to how yours sounds, there wasn't much culture except for local culture. But, my parents always taught us to try new things, and when I moved to the west coast for work, I went fucking ape-shit trying all the new foods from around the world that I hadn't been exposed to before. Now, I've lived here long enough that I've come to love Japanese food in pretty much all it's forms. I eat at ramen houses and sushi bars at least twice a week, if not more, and japanese steakhouses at least once or twice a month. And, just FYI, food prep is an art form in Japan, so even if it looks like decoration, it's usually ALWAYS edible.
