BUT

use any other kind of next in lieu of the pecans:

walnuts
slivered almonds

As an immigrant I have to agree, ive tried apple, blueberry and a couple others but they all are kinda strange by themselves. Ive had apple pie with ice cream and it tasted good but again apple pie itself is marginal at best. Pecan pie all the way.

Most overly sweet recipes are salvageable by reducing the amount of sugar used or by replacing some of the corn syrup with blackstrap molasses. Also if you're using a recipe that has the pie end up looking like OP's pick you need to add more pecans and reduce the syrup accordingly. A good pecan pie should have the pecans evenly distributed through syrup rather than resting on top.
