The name of this thread is Never Again.

Post the things you will never eat again and why.

The store was out of my usual beef dish and about everything else, so I took a chance on this.

It tastes like chewing tobacco. A lot like chewing tobacco. Only even worse.

Although I didnt explicitly find HFTC in the ingredients, after gagging from the sweetness and tobacco flavor, found that it had sugar, brown sugar, corn starch, some sort of sweet vinegar and molasses.

Never. I was expecting some basic pork with a light bbq sauce.

What I got was pork soaked in tobacco spit floating in enough sugar to make a honeybee diabetic.

I'll never eat hotpockets again.
I had a box in my freezer that I would grab one to eat when I didn't feel like cooking.
Box still had a year left on the best by date when I ate one to find all of the pepperoni inside had spoiled and gone green.
Checked the rest of the box to find that they all were that way.

I've had it multiple times. First few times I enjoyed it because of how different it was, then it just became drab and I noted just how heavily it is covered in black pepper. Probably will not return to, but not the worst.

I tried to like those but they seemed doughy to me, and the inside seemed meager, and just salt and grease.

If they seemed more like that picture, I think they would be better. I like stromboli, but I cant get into them.

Funyuns.

I've always loved them and could never control myself around them when there was an open bag.

As such, I'd restrict myself to like 2-3 bags a year.

The last bag I had over a year ago was slightly not crunchy enough; almost as if they hadn't been fried long enough or whatever.

Cannot eat them after that.

Im curious, because I though lasagne was universally loved.

Is it the ingredients, or the combination.

For example, if you just nibbled at the individual constituents, like a noodle, or some cheese, or a chunk of beef in tomato sauce, would you have the same reaction?

What about other pastas like manicotti or stuffed shells? Pizza?

My mother was a terrible cook, desu. Later on she just gave up. Most of my youth I thought I didnt like a lot of things just because of the way she made them. For example, I thought I hated liver and fish until I tried them made well, and loved them.

She was so bad, I remember the day I ate dinner at a friends and thought they must be rich or his mom was a great cook because the vegetables tasted so good. It was just a frozen blend. Thats how bad of a cook she was.

I dont know how someone manages to fuck up pre-made pancake batter and cake mix, but she did.

This is the sort of woman who would put ketchup in her mashed potatoes, A1 on her steak (no, not a playful dab, a fifth of the bottle) and sent me to school with butter on lebannon bologna sandwiches.

She had absolutely no kitchen sense whatsoever. A plate of the woman's fried chicken looked like a miniature crime scene. She cooked the only steak that I have ever seen a hungry dog turn down. At school bake sales, she was consistently asked to contribute paper plates. My father himself went through a full pepper shaker every month. In the summer, the kitchen was notable as being the only room with no files.

And yet the woman could not be any stricter about table manners. So family meals at home had two layers of torture. We were forced to conduct Emily Post levels of etiquette while being forced to eat the worst swill ever concocted in a developed nation. My father would actually smuggle fast food into the house sometimes before dinner...

Our Golden Corral however is pretty bad. I was at one in the South that was great. But here in the northeast, not so much. I hear so many bad things about it now that I wonder if the whole thing is in decline.

I dont understand their business model either. Its either a buffet or it isn't. At some point it became fashionable for places to call something a buffet and then make the only plates available the size of a tea saucer, almost like its some joke.

If you are going to offer a buffet, you completely run counter to the mood that would buy it by trying to shave portions for profit and using low minded tricks to obviously screw the person who can tell the difference between a plate and a saucer.

As a result the person either has to use three such 'plates' to sample the buffet or make multiple trips.

No dignity in business at all these days.

Not hating life cereal
It's top notch, I just don't like them because of an event.

Shortly after Hurricane Katrina I got 2 big boxes from food assistance programs which contained a total of 48 boxes of cinnamon life and some other stuff and water but the bulk of it all was cinnamon life cereal. I don't know why but they just gave me all this fucking cereal.

So for the next 2 months my diet consisted mostly of cinnamon life cereal since it was nice and saved me money, the first week I didn't have milk so I sometimes ate them with water. It wasn't bad but I made myself sick on them since I ate so much.
10 years later and even the thought of eating a bowl makes me lose my appetite.

>'clean your plate'
I had this times 100 since we ate with depression era grandparents constantly.
If I didn't finish the entire plate I wouldn't hear the end of it for the rest of the night. I'm definitely fat now, and I catch myself eating just because "it will go bad soon" or "I'm almost done, there's only a little left" even if I'm not hungry anymore.
Once my mom got pissed at us kids because we never wanted what she made (usually ramen noodles, or other poor people food) so she bought a giant thing of beef liver and made us eat it. Fucking disgusting, I still won't go near liver.
Another time, I asked for that chocolate donut cereal because I'm a stupid kid and my mom finally caved and got it. When breakfast time came around I said I really liked it and she got all pissy and yelled "of course you like it, it's pure sugar!" I was a sensitive kid (total pussy, kek) and was really young, so I didn't expect that and I started to cry a little but try to hide it. She must have felt bad because she said it was okay and made me finish it even though I didn't want it anymore and felt guilty. Cut to today and now I don't eat breakfast cereal, and usually not breakfast at all.
It's weird how it's the dumb little things that sticks with you. I'm conditioned to buy only the cheapest food possible and spend very little to nothing on entertainment. This isn't so bad now, but for the longest time it was PAST the point of practicality and just into stupid territory.

But there are so many ways to liven them up. The whole point of cooking is to morph one thing into another. Its not like one starts making pasta by shucking and grinding wheat.

Sure, there's plenty you can do to make garbage tasty. The Chinese and Latin Americans are masters of it. But once you get into the habit of cooking everything from scratch, and only buying ingredients all that highly processed convenience stuff starts to taste false. So does fast food. You don't notice how disgusting it is until you stop eating it for a while then try it again.

You really only have to look at the ingredients. Is there shit in there you wouldn't put in if you were cooking it yourself? If there are it's legit to ask yourself why the fuck would you eat it. And the only real answer is laziness.

Well, sometimes time and resource an issue. I dont think its fair to say someone is lazy for making a sandwich because they dont have time to whip up quiche just for lunch.

Fresh is better tasting, I think, but in truth, much of human consumption needs are not based on simply taste.

Taste and freshness are luxuries of time, resource, utilities and knowledge, but they dont compose the needs of most of our consumption. Quality and appeal aren't the same thing depending on the context.

To put it one way, form follows function, others might point to demand and market forces.

Consider the caveman who plucks a ripe fruit while on a hunt for something he presumably has to spend time on cooking later. The quality of each is relative, but the appeal is suited to the needs, time and availability.

I generally agree with what you're saying, I just think there is more to consider.

I suppose, but think of it like this: Just over a century ago there was little in the way of fast food, and very little prepared food available. So someone in the home (usually the wife or grandmother) played the role of dedicated cook. She bought ingredients and spent time turning them into meals. If the family had enough money to buy decent ingredients and she was the least bit talented everyone ate pretty well. There was really no other option.

Now cooking is seen by some as a luxury, because there are other options. There's fast food, heat and eat convenience food and countless snack type foods that are passed off as meals.

Like the crap in OP pic. You see that in the supermarket and think, "Shit, I can have pulled pork without going to the trouble of making it myself!" But unl.ike making it yourself, where your primary concern is taste this product was carefully created using other criteria. It has to have a decent shelf life. It has to be profitable, which means it's made from the cheapest possible ingredients. And it has to be inoffensive to mass market consumers, so it can't have any real character beyond salty and sweet.

The result is a seriously degraded version of pulled pork. All similar products suffer from the same thing, because that degradation has become the standard. And people who eat this kind of degraded food on a regular basis have gotten used to it, and lost the ability to be critical of it. So they keep buying it.

To those of us who cook and know what food is supposed to taste like this shit tastes really fucking wrong. Unfortunately we've become something of a minority. I'd still rather put in the hour plus in the kitchen every day if it means I rarely if ever have to eat degraded food.

They swear its tasty, but the science behind it is some real Frankenstein tier engineering. The scientists seem to literally compete on how to make food nutritious, edible and last ridiculous amounts of time.

I buy convenience stuff often because I have little time, and honestly, much of it tastes fine; frozen vegetable mixes, sausages, canned soups, frozen lasagne etc. If it tastes alright, I dont see the harm.

But of course, this genre of food, as you say, is where a lot of unpleasant concoctions and marketing experiments lie.

Its not that I dont appreciate real cooking, I just have other priorities sometimes.

In truth, I think the human food needs are far more primitive than our likes. Our body will process a lot of things without a problem that aren't especially haute cuisine. We tend to eat a lot of what we dont need and dont actually metabolize a lot of what we actually consume. In the modern west, we take in a ton of protein we dont need, and truly toxic levels of sugar, fats and carbs.

A fresh made casserole may taste great, but nutritionally fares little better than some indulgence menu item at Burger King.

I'd maunder on about America's obesity problem among the poor vis-a-vis our mass food distribution methods, food deserts, a decline in domestic culture generally and market forces vs. sane diet, but that would end up being even more tl;dr

I do respect and appreciate your esteem of the alchemy of cooking though.

This is one of my guilty pleasures (above). For $6-9, I get a roast beef that isn't perfect, but is nice in a jiffy. Some are better than others. I'll make it with some Green Giant Baby Vegetable Medley and some Bob Evans frozen mashed potatoes, and have the semblance of a decent meal in about 16 minutes.

I hear the BirdsEye "Voila" series of mixed vegetables are immensely popular and have a reputable health rating too.

That ticks me off. Too much salt is about the clumsiest thing a cook can do. Although some Asian foods do seem to do that.

I hear that Chinese food in America was unpopular before the immigrant cooks learned to load it up with butter, sugar and salt for the American palate, and that American Chinese food in no way resembles the native cuisine. I'd believe it.

There might not be any harm, depending on how you see the world. In my view there are many non-food ingredients in convenience food - coloring, preservatives, artificial flavors - that I'd simply rather not eat if I can help it. Then there's the matter or aesthetics. How much people value aesthetics varies widely. To me they're pretty freakin' important. And having my dinner be a second or third rate version of a particular dish that comes out of a plastic container and was made in some factory weeks, maybe months ago is more than I can handle. I already know how good food can be if you put a little effort into it. I can't go back.

That heat and eat stuff is just too grim for me.

Did you go to the same location both times?

Management and crew make a difference. Here in the US, it depends on where you are. If you try fast food in the city, it employs city people and is utter shit. If you go to the burbs, management and crew tend to have some basic standards more often and at least make an effort.

Its not just the employees, but the way the franchise responds to its local demographic. Inner city ones are run like prison chow hall (and built for security). The ones in the burbs tend to be more relaxed.

Even then, management and crew make a difference. I have seen good ones in the city and poor ones in the burbs. If a company is making millions of dollars and one outlet is serving shit, its the outlet, not the franchise.

I would note though that franchises build and serve menus according to the demographic of the area.

I have seen KFCs that looked like proper restaurants, complete with carpet, plants and buffet, while ones in the inner city can resemble prison cafeterias with fixed stools and designed for visual security.

Fast food places in the city seem to double as homeless shelters. After nightfall, they wont even give trays for fear of them being used as weapons between customers.

Indeed. There seems to be a link between poverty, stress and eating. I am not quite certain if it has to do more with comfort seeking behavior, or if there is something in the distribution.

Poor people in urban areas have more time consuming difficulty getting access to supermarkets. They typically dont have cars to haul large quantities at lower prices, and the fastest access is to fast food outlets.

They also dont immediately recognize things as food, because when there even is any cooking skill, other things are missing, like adequate temperature controlled storage or preparation space or utilities. So they literally dont recognize raw ingredients as food because they either dont have the means, knowledge and equipment to cook them, or they dont perceive the means from habit. Supermarkets leaving the cities, I think, probably has a large factor in it, probably due to theft, since grocery is a razor thin mark up and profit.

Time is also an issue for the working class, especially if there are children.

Finally there is just plain old marketing for convenience. The term convenience here is a bit of an understatement, since the pressing need for food is matched against meager environments for preparation and storage.

Worse, once poor food selections become habits, even correcting the environment isn't instantly helpful because, again, habit makes it hard for them to recognize and like better food.

And then finally, there is basic stress related, comfort seeking behavior, the same you'd find in most any stressed creature.

I dont mean to sound dehumanizing. We are all creatures and we have the same basic natural triggers for stress and food seeking behaviors.

Solving the problem of a tasty meal now is more real than the more abstract problem of declining health until its obvious for most people. Our ability to solve a problem is relative to our perceived environment and access to tools.

>> No.7053482

>>7053466

If I had no car, a tiny kitchen with few utensils, minimum cooled storage, and came from parents of the same problems so no cooking knowledge was transmitted between generations, I imagine that a bag full of veggies and fresh fish would seem an enigma to me too.

It reminds me of a bat I cared for for a day.

I would hold a live insect up to him, knowing he had to be starving (which is it was only a day, he had to feed).

I would hold up a big fat tasty mosquito or moth and he would not recognize it as food any more than we would recognize a burger on the floor as being anything but a mess. It had to be flying for him to recognize it as food.

The word 'recognize' is important here because recognition of food is an instinctive thing, a reflex, which is why we are cautious to ingest new things. It has to happen fairly quick or the mind just doesn't process it as something as deeply biologically intimate as food.

So a lot of what we perceive as food is because of the way it is presented. Think of food packaging. Think of all the goop we eat simply because of the way it is packaged or because someone put it on a clean plate next to a shiny fork. This all cues our brain into "its okay, you can eat it" based on pure faith, not analysis or knowledge.

If you cant cook, flour does not look like food. If you are stressed, salad is no comfort. If you have little more than a hotel kitchenette, a great deal on 10 pounds of raw chicken doesn't seem like that great of a deal. If you are poor and can walk two minutes to a pair of cooked beef patties for three dollars, or spend an hour on a bus each way to pick up only what you can carry which will spoil in heat before you get back, the cheeseburger looks better.

There is a link between poverty and obesity, but I am not sure it is any one single thing.

Vinegar.

Can't cook with it, can't clean with it, can't have it in anything I eat, can't even stand to have the bottle open near me.

It's because my cunt of an aunt was batshit crazy. I went up to where my cousin lived when I was younger to visit, and one day the aunt cleaned the entire house from top to bottom with about 12 bottles of vinegar. I couldn't even stay inside the house for longer than 2 minutes, the stench was so overwhelming. It was as if someone had boiled a bottle of it inside a small car and let it ferment for a day or two before boiling another bottle. The most disgusting, nauseating, excruciating smell on the planet. I had to shit outside because I couldn't stand being inside for long enough. I couldn't sleep for two days because of the smell either

Never will I ever use vinegar. Ever.

Nachos. Processed liquid nacho cheese, really, since I'm still totally down for normal melted cheese. First time I had it, it was cold and some horrible off-brand I guess. The people heated it up a little in a crockpot but it was the nastiest thing I can remember putting in my mouth. It's still enough to help me vomit when I need to.

Over the summer I worked for a small place that had the poor excuse for nachos on the menu and this was the brand used in the large cans that we just dumped into the heated container. At one point we had another but generally I think you're going to be getting garbage no matter what brand it is. I tried a little myself one day on some nachos and I also wanted to vomit cause the texture and taste was so gross. I don't know how people enjoyed the stuff and many even asked for extra sauce (which basically meant they wanted tortilla chips in a canned processed cheese soup). Even the way it smelled made me cringe, the worst was cleaning the stuff though. The smell was so bad it could kill. On the bright side the corn tortilla chip rounds we used we really good chips themselves.

I tried these too. The cheese larvae specifically. They were perfectly fine at first. Tasted like a cross between popcorn hulls and Asian crackers or something. Until I saw the long black insides sticking out of one that looked like a bone(though they dont have bones so Im still not sure what it was). Couldn't eat anymore after that.

There is legitimately healthy non-saccharine Southern food, but a huge majority of the South doesn't actually cook for themselves.

You also have a high concentration of uneducated poor people that don't bother learning nutrition. You can stumble upon some pretty good meals down here.

Dutch salted licorice.

No, seriously, fuck this awful shit.
When I was a kid I ate a bunch of this and was sick that night. And not 'I ate too much candy' sick, more 'I drank Ganges water and now I have amoebic dysentery' sick. Projectile vomiting, galloping diarrhea, and nausea that could fell Cthulhu.

Even the smell of this crap makes me want to hurl. Turns out that it's made with ammonium chloride, not sodium chloride. Ammonium chloride is a gastric irritant... And I didn't know, being a kid.

Seriously Holland, there is not a circle of hell deep and horrific enough for whichever one of your accursed race that spawned this flavour abomination.

I feel ill just recalling the taste of it coming back up.

My dad traveled for work when I was growing up and always stopped off in Amsterdam (I only later realized why).

He'd always bring back little presents and shit when we were little, always stroopwafels (before they were really sold in the States), but sometimes he'd bring back salted licorice (because he knew I loved licorice), and I never like it.

The only salted licorice I've ever liked is the salted licorice fish they sell at Ikea, and a whole bunch of duty-free shit I bought in Iceland while on a drunk layover.

American style 'cinnamon' flavour is vile in general and tastes nothing like cinnamon. My sister once brought some cinnamon 'red hots' candies after touring the US. They were utterly hideous.

I guess the American approach to cinnamon flavour is the same as the American approach to hops in craft beer- just go overboard, crank it to 11, and let balance and subtlety go to hell.

I bought and tried some almond milk just out of curiosity. Don't really know what I expected, I didn't expect it to taste like regular milk though. First of all the smell was like a bag of potato chips. Like just normal potato chips with no special seasoning. And the taste, holy fucking shit. One of the most disgusting things ever. It really did taste like someone took a bag of chips, ground it all up, combined with water, strained it, and poured it into a container.
Never again.
