Nobody taught me to cook at home. We're hispanic but my mom isn't a great cook. I know how to make some things just from being there but she always made food before she left for work, while we was at school.

Everyone in the house sat around watching tv all day and eating junk food, beans and tortillas, and whatever food she made with rice.

When I left home, I learned to cook for myself. I still tend to favor hispanic food, but I go for more vegetables. I love making picadillo with mushrooms, dried chiles, onion, garlic, corn, and toasted pine nuts and I usually add in whatever veg I might have, just chopped down. It's great for chiles rellenos, pastelitos, empanadas, and that sort of thing.

I use yuca, chamoya, jicama, stuff like that from my childhood that I used to hate. I guess other things I wasn't taught but just picked up was to make fruit "waters" during the summer, and make a lot of soups when it's cool out.

I leaned to cook by cooking. I learned how to clean by living at home. We cleaned every single day, sweep and mop the whole house. You don't make anything without cleaning up. You're not done in the kitchen until it's clean. That's something I value, as well as keeping the house looking pretty and tidy. I'm glad I got that drilled into my head early. Now it's a lot easier in the kitchen for me, I think, just naturally because I instinctively keep things tidy and in their place. I think that's invaluable.

I was going to agree that nobody taught me anything, but that's pretty wrong. I guess I learned some things. I'm not a great cook, but I'm trying to work on that actively, every day. I'm definitely not shit at it.

I have a friend who can't cook to save her life. I had to explain to her how to cook fresh green beans for her baby because she only guys pre-prepared foods and has never had to cook them fresh before.
Canned veggies and fruits, frozen burritos, Hot Pockets or basic shit like Hamburger Helper and boxed mac and cheese. She basically just eats those things, plus cereal and chicken and sometimes hamburger. She goes through almost a whole 2 liter of Coke a day.
Her baby is only 10 months old and weighs the same as a small baby elephant, and she's average weight. I don't know how she stays so skinny but she's destroying that poor kid by forcing her eating habits onto her. She says she can't afford fresh food.

Just FTR, I'm also a grill and I'm only a few months older than her (I'll be 22 next month) and nearly every person I cook for compliments the food. She knows what she grew up with, I guess. My mom isn't a terrible cook but she isn't a good on either, but my dad was fantastic and I taught myself to cook after they got divorced when I was 9 so I wouldn't always have to rely on my mom's food.

Same happened to me, in a way; my mom got diagnosed with PP MS and in a couple of years she became disabled and weak, unable to walk and hold a knife, thus unable to cook. The only other family we have is my brother, and he works through entire day, so it was up to me to take care of her, and that included cooking. I dug up some old grandmother's cookbooks and in about a year I learned to cook quite well.
It's a shame she couldn't teach me herself, for her cooking was amazing. Sadly due to her condition she forgot most of it, but she's happy that I taught myself. I won't say I'm great, but what matters is that she enjoys it.
So I was pretty much forced into learning how to cook, but it's great and I enjoy it. In the mean time I have friends my own age who don't even know how to boil pasta. At least they're grateful when I cook something for them

The third time I began to lose patience, as they weren't able to really help me in the kitchen, or alternate cooking nights with me. Rather frustrating.

You're going to be eating your entire life, might as well learn how to do make things you'll enjoy, which are somewhat healthy, and affordable. The frustration is the hardest part. As a /g/entoomen it seriously triggers me when everyday technology - be it cooking or komputah - is seen as arcane wizardry when every effort is made to make it accesible and simple. I may not be the next masterchef but I can whip up something edible out of almost anything given a bit of thought and an hour to prep and cook it.

Really the biggest hurdle i've found is people who don't care for cooking (or see it as a means to an end) don't engage their fucking brains and time everything out. Unless you are cooking for (say) 8+ people its all a matter of knowing what goes on when to get it all served for X time.

>But it's so simple
Well so are a lot of things one can learn to do. Doesn't mean there's an obligation to learn everything that's easy. One can eat relatively affordable and somewhat healthy without any skills, so learning to cook doesn't have to be a critical skill. As long as society doesn't collapse I'd say it's a net positive thing.

My experience has taught me that blinding following the recipe is dead easy, its spotting when shit is going wrong and knowing how to undo said fuckup thats hard.

>>7007325

Exactly - normies (no matter the subject) turn their brains off the second things go against their mental image of how shit should go down.

I once legit had to tell someone how to cook scrmbled egg because he had no concept of it beyond "egg + heat = food".

Nothing ever goes to plan yo - plenty of ways to fuck it up even when follwing a recipe to the letter. Not all cookers are equal. A recipe only tells you the method and ingeredients - spotting that something is going wrong (lets say, your omlette is cooking unevenly) takes experience.

I can cook many dishes blindfolded now, but thats taken years of fuckups and asking for help to get there - just like any skill. See also: just because you can read a carpentry book doesn't mean you can lay a wooden floor in a house. Plenty of unforseen problems.

My mom only taught me how to cook with boxed process foods. She would get upset with me for not wanting fast food all the time ( I would get upset stomach). So once I got on my own I taught myself to cook. Now I love home cooking and real food.

they are empowered OP. by which i mean they can't feed themselves or maintain their dwelling place or raise their offspring (should they choose to). They don't need men anymore because by their own strength and will (by which i mean the tax dollars of working men manifested in the form of a sugar daddy who needs no sex in return aka the government) they have liberated themselves from the oppression of responsibility, virtue, culture, and intellect. And real men only fuck you and move on. You have no use to be kept. I know this because I am spinning 2 plates just like you right now who have no hope for anything beyond my load in their mouth. At the very least, learn some kind of lazy ass crock pot recipes. Pounding ass (and yes, you always give up the ass) tires a man. I would like a bowl of chili after.
