Do you throw stuff away after its Use by date?

I had a pack of lovely bramley apple sausages that my girlfriend threw away because they were two days past the "use by date". I wanted them for my dinner tonight, but she said they are dangerous now because she's nuts.

kek. Those labels are just to get people to throw it away before it's even bad so they buy more. That said, I wouldn't go too far past the good by date. I keep milk like a week or 2 past the expiration date. With meat I usually try to only go a week past.

Honestly, most things are probably good like 2-3 weeks past the date as long as they're refrigerated. Also, sell by/good by/etc is not the same as an expiration date

No they're not. They're there because of food safety regulations. It's the law. The dates given always err on the side of caution, because a serious error can shut a factory down for good.

the nose knows OP. if it smells bad (or looks) then it's probably bad

For 1-2 days, I throw out things like chicken salad. I keep yogurt/sour cream a bit longer, and I usually find that milk is indeed bad on the deadline. Any raw meat is simply cooked within a day or I'd have not have it raw in the fridge in the first place. But, for packed or preserved sausages, if it was beef or pork, I'd probably sniff and cook, if it was chicken, I'd throw it out. Some things simply spoil badly, and ground up food is prime bad news, as is poultry. I think I might rather have e.coli cooked versus some risk of salmonella, tbh.

Leftovers are 2 days tops, usually 1.

For future reference, pop that stuff in the freezer if you think you might not get around to it by the date. The colder the better, if you want to slow bacteria growth. Or cook it, and then put the cooked sliced sausage in a ziploc and pull it out for a recipe in the next couple of weeks. I go through my fridge every time it's trash day, and I cull the stuff that needs to go, or move to freezer. Didn't feel like cooking those pork chops? Oh well, it was an italian night and you ate out, bam, to the freezer, just in case tomorrow you do the same eating out.

Nothing I eat has a use by date. . . so I suppose no?

This. Only go by use by dates if you're a geezer, a child younger than 3, or have a compromised immune system.

Otherwise just use your senses.

I've never had milk that didn't go chunky more than 2 days past the expiration date.

You're supposed to refrigerate milk anon

Depends on what it is. A LOT of stuff is pumped so full of chemicals and preservatives that it'll be fine for a day or two later, maybe longer. I always do a visual, consistency, and smell test first too. I've seen plenty of stuff go bad before its expiration date. But it's not like something expires on October 9th and at exactly 12:01am on the 9th the food turns rotten and inedible...

Just because it got chunky, doesnt mean its bad. I use a coffee filter to strain out the solid bits

British people are fucking bananas about use by dates. I don't know why exactly, I think there was some sort of education campaign about it after some food scare a few years back, but all I know is that it took years to get my girlfriend to stop looking at the labels and trust me not to poison her.

This.
I think stores let their deliveries sit around in the mornings out back before being put away properly in the fridges, and I noticed which stores do it the worst, and I shop elsewhere. Also the glass door are better than open shelves for maintaining the temp before I buy it. Where I used to live CVS had the better lasting milk til date, and it's their loss leader item, so pretty cheap. I certainly know I keep it quite cold at home.

About 2 days before my milk goes bad, I find that I'm making pudding or something to use it up. I like to have it for cereal and coffee, but I simply don't use it all up most of the time.
