Actually, one of the biggest complaint amongst German POW's in America in World War 2 was the fact that they had to eat white bread. It was too sweet and they considered it not much different from eating cake. They wanted whole grain and rye breads instead.

I have a bakery I drive to that has very nice white bread. It's a little porous, made to be cut in thick slices. I can say after eating it that it's better than whole wheat. There was a reason back in the day white bread was for high rolling aristocrats only.
