that's not what i meant by arbitrary. the point is that it's not unethical to talk to your customers so when you talk about what SHOULD have been done you need to make it clear if it's what you would advise as an employer or if you feel they somehow morally deserved to be fired. i don't believe that these kinds of policies are a good thing.

i go to shops expecting that people might chitchat with me. if they don't do their job, i'll complain, but stopping short of hitting on me is not something i consider part of their job. they can have a crack if they want.

the correct usage of conversation is not limited to always keep your mouth shut. infact, as someone who worked service, if you don't humor benign customer conversation you can get in trouble. asking for someones number or giving your number is strictly across the line. the purpose of doing your job is to make sure the customer is satisfied within reason. smiles, conversation, eye contact, may make an autistic person shit his pants and spill spaggetthi, but for most people ordering, it shows that the person taking the order is attentive and cares about their order and them, even if its shallow its the expectation of presentation in the food service industry. maybe if someone wanted the people to keep their trap shut they can build a restaurant concept entirely around autistic people. generally fast food caters to that though already with their electronic selection menu boards.
