Educate a dumbass. Why are some donuts like the left and some donuts like the right, despite both being a cakey type donut?

tbh fam i think they're probably made out of different kinds of batter.. the left being more "cakey" and the right being more of a classic donut.

it's possible the left one was just baked in an oven and not fried like the right as well. idk tho, i don't fucking make donuts

They're both cake donuts rather than raised, meaning yeast isn't used for leavening. The one on the left is an 'old fashioned' cake donut, likely with sour cream in the batter which imparts different texture. Those are fried at a lower temperature than regular cake donuts helps them gain that irregular shape. They almost universally get a thick faintly vanilla glaze shortly out of the fryer.

I prefer regular cake donuts because basically no one sells unglazed old fashioneds. Way too sweet for my taste.
