Depends where you go. The head chef at my first place had a one page written exam every applicant had to take, regardless of position (just basic shit about how to prepare some common dishes + some sanitation laws), then maybe 5 minutes going over it and my other qualifications. After that it was just a few minutes of discussing the position then they hired me on the spot.

Around here in the US south, you can rent a decent 2 person apartment for under 500 usd, a car payment on a reasonably priced new car may be under 200, and you can eat at a nice restaurant for 2 for $70 with all you included.

If car payments are a major issue, there are plenty of nice used cars for less than 5000, early 2000s Nissans and toyotas. It's just way less expensive to live in the states than in many other places, especially when you consider the actual tax rate for someone making so little might be less than 20% (not sure because I haven't made so little in a long time)

Yeah, those sorts of prices, coupled with euro/aus tax rates, are why I never understand people griping about insurance costs and the like in the US. I am a federal probation officer and I work around some real shitty and destitute people, and most of them manage to make ends meet, even on tiny salaries and irregular hourly jobs. As long as you don't go crazy with luxuries, it is very inexpensive to get by in the US, and even in shitty areas, the crime rate is not as bad as you would think.

Problem is the same destitute people have to have the best phones, car accessories, new tats... sorry, I apologize for the derailment but my point is that basic living accommodations in the US are extremely affordable, even on low salaries such as we discussed. The problem arises when people who haven't got the means spend on toys.
