Root beer isn't ginger ale. The difference between ginger ale and ginger beer is about $1 a bottle.

Root beer is flavoured with sassafras.
Ginger ale and ginger beer are both, as their names imply, flavoured with ginger, but ale is generally with an extract and/or artificial flavouring while beer is with ginger root itself. As such, ginger ale lacks the bite and spiciness of ginger beer.
Some find root beer to taste medicinal and don't like it. Some find ginger beer to be too sharp and pungent and don't like it. Ginger ale is the least commonly actively disliked of the three.

Ginger beer = stronger flavor, more ginger, less carbonation, I've never seen an alcohol version

I've tried a lot of different brands of ale/beer and have found that the best is Canada Dry ginger ale. Heres a time when the most popular option is the best option.

I believe the difference between ginger beer and ginger ale is that ginger beer uses fermented ginger root for a stronger ginger flavor. Both ginger ale and ginger beer are non-alcoholic unless stated on the bottle.
