Business articles over the past year have attributed the menu complexity as one of the root causes of problems in US McD's. It takes workers so much longer to get an order out when you have such a big menu that they just lose business from people who don't want to wait that long. There are instant, immediate effects, like when people look at a drive-thru and it has 7 cars backed up they'll skip it, and long-term effects of just negative experiences with long waits. The problem of an extra ten seconds per order is compounded during lunch and other busy times, which is precisely when people don't have time to wait a few more minutes.

In Asia, the problems are quite different, ranging from adulterated ingredients, competition, and economic factors.

MCD is losing share confidence and SSS (same store sales). The menu thing is true, but that is a symptom, not a cause. The food quality is also part of the problem, but it is not new. The root cause is that MCD made attampts to capture their next generation of addicts and badly miscalculated the bullshit detectors of the children of gen X, who are born with the cynicism of a Bismarck and develop it into a high art at the hands of their acidicly pissed off parents, who were fucked over by every company and corporation that ever heard of them (gen X).

Europe is MCD only bright spot. They've introduced self-ordering technology there which lets you key your burger and sides and drinks, layer by layer. So you can key, "pattty" "patty" "cheese" "lettuce" and that's what you get. People spend more because of the thrill of being in control. And they say they love it and sales are up where it has been deployed.

Their future in the US depends upon real innovations like that, because as it is going, MCD in the US has five years till the death spiral begins. They are where Sears was in 2003.

In the US at least, profits for pretty much all businesses have stagnated or declined. Food prices have been rising (beef is up something like 30% in just 2 years) and much of McD's appeal is inexpensive food so they can't raise prices too much to match the rising cost of ingredients.

Then like others have mentioned, millennials prefer a wider variety of flavors instead choosing chipotle, or local places serving pho & bhan mi, food trucks, etc. which offer much higher quality food for only slightly more money.

Also, most grocery chains have been upping their prepared food game and have slowly been stealing revenue away from fast food and fast casual.

I live in white midwestern US, where all our Marky Walhbergs are fancy and have paintings of British people foxhunting from horseback.

The chicken that is supposed to be like normal chicken (ie. not injection molded paste), is the worst thing on the menu. The Burgers taste like chemicals and look like bits of recycled cardboard thats been stamped into shape. The McRib would make us sick while we cooked them because they smelled so bad. It too looks like recycled cardboard thats been stamped into shape.
Speaking of which, the ventilation systems are set up so that the air over the fryer and bread toasting thing is pumped over to the front counter, making customers hungrier.
The eggs we used were pre cooked, and sent to us in little individually wrapped packages as egg patties. They're kept in the freezer by the door. Same thing goes for all the veggies actually, they're all pre-cut and frozen until we need them. Though we assembled the yogurt and salads ourselves.

The only thing of value on the menu, are the fries, new coffee things, spicy McChicken, and maybe the apple pies. But honestly, if the apple pies vanished one day, I wouldn't be sad.
Oh, and the spicy popcorn chicken, but they dropped those a few months before I started working there. Same goes for the chipolte bbq, that was some good shit.

I should restate how nasty the McRib was. I dont care if you think they taste good, those things freaked us out, dont eat them.

out of the big burger places burger king whips ass on all fronts. I recently went there and was very happy with speed of service, food freshness, it looked like it was prepared by somebody who cared, fries were so hot they were literally too hot to eat, and whatever burger I got was big and good. It had a1 sauce and lots of meat, can't remember cheese or if it had bacon. the biggest complaint was the price, combo was almost ten bucks. I felt a little cucked paying that much for fast food but wasn't totally bummed because everything was tasty and filling.

I've fallen off going to wendy's but recently had a random jr bacon and small fry for dinner, I thought it was a decent burger and fry for the price, ran me about $3.50. favorite fast burger overall is whataburger, I hate mcdonalds except for the fish sandwich of all things, which is inexplicably edible.

how is burger kings business doing? I never really see anybody talk about it on here.

In the US there's really only two reasons to eat at McD's: the fries and nostalgia. Everything on their menu is done better by a competitor except for the fries. Better burgers are everywhere. So is better chicken. I'm not at all surprised by all of this. 10 years ago, we would go hang out at places like McDees and spend a few bucks. Now I'm not a teenager and the food makes me feel bad, and I end up spending $9 on some shitty food that I'm only eating because I haven't eaten all day and there's a long drive ahead of me. I opt for those fucking bottled smoothies that are everywhere in the US as meal replacements these days.

Working in a Mcd is a strange experience, no one cares for hygiene, most of the other employees are teenagers and I mostly see fat people or teens/kids order. Most of the ingredients lay around forever and loose any similarity to what they were (salad turning black, "cheese" becoming a huge blop of yellow goo, the precooked bacon reverting to uncooked bacon etc.) Also lots of the people who go there feel like they are blessing our humble restaurant with their divine appearance - if you go to Mcd you are either too young or too stupid to cook, nothing else. Also to all the people ordering special stuff like no cucumber, FUCK YOU! if I just made a fresh plate of 10:1 and the manager is there so I can't just remove the slice I do a hundred different things before I start working on your order.

A lot of younger people here don't really have a decent grasp on the current market and McDonald's history within the market.

For decades, longer than some of you have been alive, fast food barely existed outside of only the largest chains and roach coaches ("food trucks" for the hipsters reading along). You wanted something to eat? You either made it yourself, went to sit in a traditional restaurant (short order included), risked food poisoning, ordered pizza (and ONLY pizza came, none of this sandwich or wing bullshit)/asian, or went to one of the large-chain fast food restaurants...

And McD's was the king of fast food. Their marketing and business strategies took them there. You could craft a PhD on their case. But their rise isn't the point of this thread.

Their fall started to happen when Subway came in and shit all over their king-of-the-castle image. Not only was Subway growing absurdly fast (for any industry) but their model for the fast food industry had NOTHING TO DO WITH BURGERS. This shit blew the business world's mind. McD's had so carefully crafted a burger-based fast food industry with themselves on top but the fast food industry had suddenly expanded.

Now that a non-McD's model had proved VERY successful a ton of other fast food restaurants began opening or expanding.

Competition is chipping away at McD's, and nothing else. Sure, they've had plenty of little problems, but those are basically aren't material in the grand scheme of their business practices. Given how dense their store population is, it's not hard to see how any kind of competition can fuck them up.

This is true. Fast food outside of places like LA is really only about 40 years old. Before that you had short order places, diners and the like. Manhattan didn't have a McDonald's until 1972. So for many in the generation hitting retirement age right now McDonald's was not part of their childhood, though they probably took their kids there.

McDonald's made their success by defining fast food as the burger and fries, and serving it up quickly in a relatively clean environment at an affordable price. Stressing cleanliness, efficiency, casual dress and a no tipping policy made them easy to accept for people who were not used to eating out on a regular basis. This was a time when pizza was still considered a foreign food in much of the country, and tacos didn't exist outside of the Southwest. The main options for fast food were burgers and hot dogs, and the burger had already taken over the hot dog's place as the all-American junkfood meal.

But today just about everyone who is middle aged or younger is more restaurant savvy than the folks eating at McDonald's during its heyday. A burger and fries served quickly in a relatively clean environment is not enough to satisfy people who have distinct preferences when it comes to dining out. Even if you live in a place where there's nothing but chain restaurants you have a sub shop, a taco/burrito joint and a pizza joint that are your go to places. There's absolutely no novelty left in an uninspired burger and fries.

And since a cheap, fast burger and fries is the core of their brand there's not much they can do to compete without rebranding the business entirely. And you can imagine the trepidation that idea causes in the boardroom when they've been so successful up until now.
