Stop buying bad versions from mass marketed produced brands at stores like Wal-Mart. Visit a bakery. Eclairs are barely sweet when made properly. And they're not always iced.

Beignets, handsdown. But, a PITA to make, proofing the dough the night before, fryer and all that, so it's saved for the right restaurant. Best of all is Morning Call in kenner, LA, but had some good ones in Arlington VA as well. Nothing is better than something that just came out of a fryer before being hit with the powdered sugar.

Cruellers have a similar dairy dough and usually passable no matter who is making it fresh.

These show up around town near Lent, so much be a cultural thing. Polish Paczki have a light dough from a touch of alcohol in the batter and eggy like challah, and usually a freshly made fruit filling. I'm partial to raspberry, and the orange zest is noticeable. It's not as sweet as a jam. If you can find one filled with custard, you might be lucky enough to pick up a hint of orange flower or rose hip, or some other herb-alicious essence water.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C4%85czki

I love an apple fritter...again, if it's fresh. Bavarian cream if it doesn't have premade filling. Thai donut is all about the deliciousness of sweetened condensed milk. At home if I cheat to make thai donuts, I use the buttermilk biscuit dough cut in half and quickly rolled and turned as I pan fry in a 1/4in of oil, thn I shake them in a paper bag with fine orange zest and powdered sugar, and dip in a puddle of sweetened condensed milk. A rich finish to a light stir fry night.
