The trend goes back a lot longer than 20 years. Food's cheaper and more plentiful, processed foods were literally developed to cut costs and increase profits even further, and a smaller percentage of the population is required to do hard labor to survive than ever before.

It's literally because people have good access to high caloric food sources and aren't required to move around very much to earn a living. The "liberal agenda" of fat acceptance is a result of more people being fat, not the cause of it.

In other developed countries (The U.K. being a notable example), the statistics are actually more frightening. If things continue to increase at the current rate, they'll be significantly fatter than us in a decade or two.
