Couple weeks ago, Restaurant Week (a rather awful name for a 3+week event, pedantically speaking) started here in NYC. $25 lunches and $38 for dinner. I went to Iron Chef Morimoto's place the first time and did De Niro's co-owned joint Tribeca Grill today.

Since this isn't my personal fuckin blog, Restaurant Week general. Or restaurant deals general. Does your city have one of these? Multiple ones per year? I've been to at least half a dozen places I probably never would've been to otherwise simply to get a meal I probably wouldn't bother going out for otherwise.

Pic related, it's the main course from my lunch, a chicken scallopini.

So good I had another. That's how they get you btw. $10 per beer nearly doubled my lunch cost, but considering I found a new favorite beer to bug my local markets into carrying, I consider it worth it

How was the chicken? it looks slightly dry from the photo and the arugula looks underdressed

Very dense, but not overly rich. Pretty and surprising that it wasn't some enormous sugar dump, the way a lot of really thick chocolate cakes are.

Very good for a thin piece of meat. It had some kind of light sauce, maybe a parsley base that seemed to help hold it together. The dressing was light, but just right, honestly. With all the other flavors (quinoa, corn, cherry tomatoes), it didn't need much on it to work.

And I normally don't really care for arugala

De Niro has tons of signed movie posters on the walls of the back area on the way to the bathroom. Signed Japanese Bronx Tale poster? Must be a collector's dream.

We have that in the bay area (usually in the winter after the holidays), but most of the menus aren't worthwhile. I think the restaurants do it when business is slow, and just kind of phone it in with a boring salad and usually some sort of cake for dessert.

That said, some of the places really do go for it. You just have to be judicious and look at the menus.

So far the only one that hasn't been worth shit was Bluewater Grill by Union Sq Park. - they had drink specials only in which they took five bucks off of two specific cocktails.

Fuck 'em. Everyone else so far (21 Club, Le Cirque, DelMonico's, Morimoto's and Tribeca) has been decent. No drop-off in service, no shitty portions, etc.

what's a restaurant week?

Helsinki has a restaurant day coming up, when random people set up a hundred or so pop-up restaurants for a day at parks, homes and street corners.

quite fascinating imo

It's where the good restaurants open the floodgates to the great unwashed by offering a moderately degraded 3 course dinner menu for $35, and the shit restaurants opportunistically trick the ignorant into getting the 3 course dinner menu for $35 and hope to make some extra bucks from the people who forgot to make a reservation at the good places.

It's fun the first two or three times and then you realize what a ripoff it all is. Better just to pay the regular price and get real food.

I used to live in a flyover city that had a restaurant week where participating restaurants had specials for $11, $22, and $33. For $33 you typically got 3 courses. I went once to a new place I had never been to and got a surprisingly good yellow lake perch dinner (one of my favorite kinds of fish).

Typically restaurant weeks are always in Jan or Feb just after the holidays when the restaurant industry is the slowest. It's really just a way to boost business

yea, YMMV wildly. NYC's generally pretty good, because reputation means a lot, and if some place shits all over everywhere, there's a squidrillion other places for everyone to spend there money at.

The one going on now is a 25lunch, 38dinner deal. I've done lunch twice this go around and did the $19.69 Mad Men themed one back in late winter a bunch. Can't really argue with the results, tbh. There's no way in fuck I'd eat at places like Le Cirque or DelMonico's for under $30, so I'm not upset in the slightest. Food's all been really good, and the portions haven't been tiny-ass things that've left me hungry.

fuck yea, Delmonico's essentially invented the thing, so it has the cool historical aspect of it as well.
