French here, you need to underdstand that a sub sandwich or a tex mex wrap with a frappuccino are as much of a novelty to us as a baguette sandwich is to you.

Also the customizable, made to order aspect of subway is extremely appealing to us. Higher end boulangeries may carry different styles of sandwiches but they are all made in advance and you like it or leave it.
And when I was a kid, you would have basically 3 or 4 sandwiches top to choose from: ham and butter, ham butter and cheese, saucisson and butter, maybe canned tuna or surimi with mayo.
When my generation finally had access to 30+ ingredients, 5 breads and 15 sauces, of course we would go.
Doesn't mean we won't still enjoy a regular baguette or pan bagnat sandwich. Or a kebab. Or a pizza.

I am currently reading Bill Bryson's book about his childhood in 50's USA. (great book btw, as always with Bryson).
His account of America discovering chainstores, chain restaurants and shopping malls is pretty similar to what happened in France in the 2000's/2010's.

I was born in 1983 and as a teen, there was no "fast food' per se around us. We did have this regional specialty of "baraques à frites", food trucks or trailers specialized in french fries, fried meats (fricadelle, sausage, merguez) and sandwiches/simple burgers.
We would need to drive 45mn to get to the only Mc Donald's in the region so it was a treat, for special occasions.

Mc Donald's, Subways, Starbucks (even Burger King now!) started to pop up all around the cities, first in regional capitals, then in smaller towns and even (for McD's), in the country side.
And I'll be frank, I was the first to be excited about it.
Cheesecake (a dream of mine as a kid, it was impossible to find in France) is now even available in the frozen aisle. Dr Pepper can be purchased, Arizona or Snapples Iced teas too.

I used to buy oreos at an extremely high cost from a small, US grocery store in Paris in the early 2000's, even sent an email to Nabisco to ask for them to be available in France.

Now I see the downsides of globalized cullture, when some very specific brands or Products can't compete against global industry giants and disappear.
There were Baraques à frites at every corner in my city, now there are only 2 I can think of still in business, yet we have 2 Mc D's and 1 Subway.

But we didn't go there because we were brainwashed to go, we really wanted to, and really enjoyed it.

Yeah I had to study that poem in school as well, it's saddening when you realize he's actually not asleep, not at all. Some pupils wouldn't understand what the 2 red holes on his side meant until explained.
And (this was especially true in the 60's but still is) all the french kids or their parents have lost some family members to the wars. I know how 4chan loves to mock the surrending monkeys and all, but truth is most of our cities in the northern parts have been bombed and destroyed during WWII, also a lot of battles happened during WWI (battle of Somme, and the like) so even as kids, "war" was not taken lightly. There are plenty of scottish/british/canadian memorials and cemetaries in and around the city I grew up in, and I would always feel grateful for the thousands young men who came to die on our soil.
Same with US soldiers when I visited D-Day memorials and beaches.

My teacher would often make us draw what we gathered from the poesy/text we read, and I remember (although I was a kid) thinking "this could have been me if I was born at that time", drawing the guy lying under a tree, all in pencil and with only 2 red dots on the side.

Anyway.

Typical foods are heavily influenced by belgian/flemish specialties.
Fries of course (we know they aren't "french", and we don't even call them french ourselves), as well as delicious beef stew called carbonnades flamandes (beef and onions braised then stewed in trappist beer, topped with mustard spread gingerbread until everything is coated in a thick, silky gravy. Enjoyed with fried of course, so is potjevleesch, 3 cold meat in bone Jelly.
Around September, usually the first sunday (even if you don't attend the "Braderie de Lille" which is a huge garage sale that covers most of the city and where this is a staple) you are pretty sure every restaurant will offer mussels (again with fries).
