When's the last time you went to a Polish deli?

>> No.6711533

Last time I was in Poland which was never.

>> No.6711586

About two years ago. :-(
I tried calling the place some months ago because I wanted to make sure they have something in stock but the phone seems disconnected. The website is still up but I get no reply when I email them. I don't know if it's open and it's too far for me to just go and see, especially considering that there is quite literally nothing else in that area worth doing.

Two years ago the good one near me closed. This year the better one a little farther away closed, so I'm SOL for Polish markets without making a special trip.

There are still Poles in the neighborhood, but as it becomes increasingly Mexican and Chinese the markets seem unable to hang on.

Because a private deli (of whatever nationality) will do a better job making charcuterie than a factory owned by some multinational conglomerate?

Poles are god tier when it comes to cured meat. They also show an admirable appreciation for mushrooms, cabbage and potatoes. So if you're looking for a delicious take on very sturdy food they're kind of hear to beat.

Americans need to stop doing this; none of that is really part of polish culture. Most of that stuff can be bought at the meat section at TSS or Lidls

me and my dad went to this polish deli in patterson new jersey to get blood sausage, we stood in line for like 5 minutes and the deli guys wouldn't address us maybe cause they only spoke polish. eventually some lady offered to order for us.

>There are Asians in South Brooklyn?
NYC's biggest Chinatown is on 8th Ave skirting the borders od Sunset Park, Borough Park and Bay Ridge. It's grown so big it's poking into Bensonhurst.

From wiki:
""South Brooklyn" is also in occasional use in the modern borough of Brooklyn, but without any consistency as to what it refers to. It has been used about neighborhoods as various and physically separated as Bensonhurst,[4] Carroll Gardens,[5] Gowanus,[6] Red Hook,[7] Smith Street,[8] Sunset Park,[9] Windsor Terrace,[10] as well as Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, and Park Slope.[11]"

They're not as separated as one might think.

Is Bensonhurst still heavily Christian durkadurka IE Maronite/Lebanese Catholic?
My dad is half American and grew up in Bay Ridge-Bensonhurst and when he was a kid, nearly everyone in that neighbourhood used sandspeak as their primary language.
His mum forced him to go to church several times each week because there's something genetic with durkadurkas. It causes religious fanaticism that extends beyond Mohammedan stuff. Even Christian durkadurkas are insanely religious.

Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst still have Lebanese well represented. At least once a month I grab a felafel at Al Safa on 5th Ave, which is Lebbo as fuck. Lebanese food is great. There are also old school Italians (think Saturday Night Fever) and Greeks. Recently Bensonhurst has been tilting Chinese, and Bay Ridge more Middle Eastern.

As far as food goes both neighborhoods are still good places for old school Italian-American and Mediterranean food. Bay Ridge has a few killer Middle Eastern bakeries, and Bensonhurst now has some Fujian Chinese joints.

Well thanks. Good to know that they're still about.

>Lebanese food is great
It is, but since I don't speak Arabic and my grandmother barely spoke anything else, I never picked up on what the names of any of the dishes she cooked are called and I never bother asking my dad about them, so while I'm familiar with homestyle Leb food, I don't know any names of anything, which is an odd position to be in.

The only ones I'm sure of are falafel and maqluba. And maqluba, like most casseroles the world over, isn't generally served in restaurants so people who like Leb food but aren't from a Leb family tend to have no idea what I'm talking about when I bring it up. Or, if they do happen to know what it is, they're familiar with the Palestinian version rather than the Leb version.

Come back sometime. Bay Ridge has become a much nicer place than the Gateway to Staten Island has any right to be. And your Leb heart would sing grocery shopping at Bilady's. I get a 93oz jug of Lebanese olive oil there for $15.

But I am sad to see the Polish stuff disappearing in South Slope and Sunset Park. There are still plenty of folks speaking Polish on the sidewalks, but not enough to keep the delis in business, I guess. So now I have to drag my ass to Greenpoint, which isn't going to happen very often.

Pic related just closed this year.

I've never visited those areas, though I've been to Brooklyn.

I lived in Manhattan, though, since my much older sister moved to America in 1989. I stayed with her in Yorkville when I first moved to the US in 2002. I've been to Williamsburg and other hip-and-with-it parts of Brooklyn as well as Greenpoint, but figured that Bensonhurst/Bay Ridge would be too residential to find much to do there. Plus, I don't know the American or Leb sides of my family (IE anyone related to my dad) much at all, not even their names much less how to get in touch with them.

My dad left Brooklyn (and indeed America altogether) a little over 40 years ago, keep in mind. I just liked hearing stories of this enclave of Lebs living their Leb lives in the middle of an American city.

Terms like "south brooklyn" mean shit, they're marketing terms so realitors can charge more for a "named" area. Kind of faggits in some New Jersey areas right across from the Hudson River calling it "West New York."

Bullshit. Look at this old map. It's pretty fucking obvious what South Brooklyn is - the southern part of the old town of Brooklyn.
