>go to training school, live in barracks - no kitchen 1 yr
>get stationed on submarine, barracks off duty - no kitchen 3.5 yrs
>achieve pay grade where I get stipend to move out in town, decided on moving to cheap place with no kitchen to save money - no kitchen 6mos
>get stationed in Guam, long process with housing authority here, homeless; living on ship - no kitchen 6mos
>finally move into apartment with a kitchen
What do I do now? I've been so used to eating out at restaurants that I don't even know what I need to buy for my kitchen. So far I have

>pressure cooker (for ribs. turns out okay for just starting)
>dish set for four
>14 pc pots and pans
>medium sized cast iron skillet
>Teflon spatula
>Teflon tongs
>Bluntec blender
>drying rack
>measuring cups for cups/tablespoons
>starter knife set

What else do I need? Is there another "essentials" kit for baking? How about making things for dinner out of a pressure cooker? I just don't want to end up buying a bunch of stuff I don't need

a scale: many precise baking recipes go by weight
a ladle
and those really cool silicone insulating mitts, for moving hot pans from the oven

>silicone mats

just use tea towels. they work better because silicone pads DO in fact get hot and towels can easily be doubled and tripled up.

A set of wood utensils comes in handy and wont scratch cooking surfaces, the large spoon, slotted spoon, fork, that kind of stuff.

A potato masher.

A strainer.

Tupperware type storage containers.

If you fry stuff, even pan frying then one of those wire mesh skimmer things are good, I think they're also known as spiders.

And then you bitch about not getting a "military discount" at the shop I work at? Thank you for your service but please fuck off.

That aside, what you'll need for your kitchen largely depends on what you want to cook aside from some common essentials like bowls for mixing/prep, a cutting board or two, a few saute and sauce pans, strainer/sieve for noodles and blanching veg., pepper grinder, a paring knife, a chef's knife, a bread/serrated knife, and a few wooden spoons/spatulas for manipulating food in hot pans.

If you want to get into baking bread/pastries you'll want a big mixing bowls, rolling pin, scale, and a baking stone to even out the temperature in your oven.

If you want to make Asian-style foods, you'll want a wok that matches your stove (flat-bottom for electric, round-bottom for gas), steamer baskets/trays, and possibly a small strainer for fishing deep-fried foods out of oil.

If you want to make stews and roasts, look for a dutch oven or similar roasting pan with a cover. Consider a pressure cooker if beans or pot roast are going to feature heavily in your meal plan.

Want to cook any kind of Indian food or just want to enjoy fresh spices? Definitely get a small mortar and pestle to crush spices in.

What kind of weird place are you from? If some company wants to give a discount for mil folk then that's up to them, nobody bother's them if they don't. Where are you from where you have such a weird axe to grind against folk in the military?

Are you an islamic or something?

A lot of places that give military discounts are mom and pop shops they don't have a lot of money thanks to you who give it all away but they try and that's pretty cool. A lot of places if it's just services like haircuts or a meal or something, it's gratis, not even a discount.

Maybe you shouldn't be so uptight.

I live in the back of a small business I work at since 2011
Haven't had a kitchen since
All I have is a microwave and hotplate
I recently got a convection oven. But I have to be careful as to not stink up the place.

Isn't it unfortunate that you could have joined the Air Force and befriended a gay in services to make midnight grilled cheeses and pluke in the refridgerator.
