Is red wine an acquired taste? I like white wines (even dry), I can enjoy rose on a hot summer day, but I can't get into red wine.

Just don't think of it as a "sweet" drink like you can with white wines. Red wines can be really good if you get into the headspace that it's its own flavor.

it's worth a try.

one difference in red and white besides the color of the grape is that most white wine is fermented with just the juice while red wine is the fermented with the skins of the grapes. This is where the color actually comes from. You get something else with it though which is tannins. Tannins have a very peculiar mouthfeel, very similar to bitter chocolate. Putting the two together may help you get used to that.

Try a medium bodied zin first. Cline Lodi shouldn't be too hard to find

for me it's the opposite - i've always enjoyed red wine as it has a nice "savoury" taste

i (personally) think it's harder given X price-point to find a good white wine than it is to find a good red. i've had very few white wines that i've genuinely enjoyed - and almost all of these were only enjoyed due to the food they were paired with. to find a white wine that i can drink standalone and not detest (within a reasonable price range) is nigh on impossible for me. it just (for me) has no flavour. perhaps it's because i'm a smoker and my tastebuds are ruined, but i greatly prefer strong flavours; hence red wine

Adolf Hitler (20 April 1889 – 30 April 1945) was an Austrian-born German politician who was the leader of the Nazi Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP); National Socialist German Workers Party). He was Chancellor of Germany from 1933 to 1945 and Führer ("leader") of Nazi Germany from 1934 to 1945. As effective dictator of Nazi Germany, Hitler was at the centre of World War II in Europe and the Holocaust.
Hitler was a decorated veteran of World War I. He joined the precursor of the NSDAP, the German Workers' Party, in 1919 and became leader of the NSDAP in 1921. In 1923 he attempted a coup in Munich to seize power. The failed coup resulted in Hitler's imprisonment, during which time he wrote his autobiography and political manifesto Mein Kampf ("My Struggle"). After his release in 1924, Hitler gained popular support by attacking the Treaty of Versailles and promoting Pan-Germanism, anti-Semitism, and anti-communism with charismatic oratory and Nazi propaganda. Hitler frequently denounced international capitalism and communism as being part of a Jewish conspiracy.

You have to stop wanting it to be sweet and appreciate for what it is. Once you realize that it will not taste like a white and stop comparing it to white you can appreciate it for what it is. There are some truly amazing flavors that can come from red wine. Personal favorite of mine are syrah blends. I know it's not a bordeaux but i like the mix of earthy leather and red fruit.

Try pick related.

Why not try to ease into reds by trying light reds first? Beaujolais has very low tannins, probably the lowest I can think of. As long as you stay away from Beaujolais Nouveau and regular Beaujolais, it should be satisfying. Aside from Beaujolais, Pinot Noir is also not tannic. Aside from a few communes of Burgundy, I've never had a PN that had dominant tannins.

>> No.6639879

>pinot noir is not tannic
People love to over-oak pinot noiur, especially california

If you want a wine you can trust, and you don't want to obsessively memorize an encyclopedia of which wines are ok and which aren't, buy something from europe because of DOC/DOP/AOC laws. American wine is a train wreck of people doing whatever the fuck they want, which means it's sometimes great but sometimes horrific, who knows it's a surprise isn't this fun!

Anyway, barbera wines from northern italy are fairly reliable in terms of (low) tannin levels

That's a good thing though. If everyone thought highly of Chablis and German Riesling, I'd never be able to buy great ones for under $30. The prices are already creeping up ever so slightly, but the increases aren't as severe as Burgundy (Cote d'or), which is my main interest.

>> No.6640011

Maybe he meant a decent pinot noir from France (Alsace is where it's at), which is indeed very light in tannins.

>>6639874

To me Beaujolais is kinda shitty, light red wines from the Loire Valley are so much better imo. OP could look into Saumur Champigny, they make red and white and both are to be enjoyed young and slightly chilled.

Also OP, if you dislike the astringence of red wine, know that it gets more mellow the longest it rests in barrels. "Real" red wines are not supposed to be drunk until a few years.
When you have a chance, try a pre 2010 Bordeaux that has been properly stored, open the bottle and let it breath for a couple hours.
There's no shame in asking a cavist about a good red wine for beginners.

Also if you can't afford french wines and as much as I like the USA, from what I've been able to experience South Africa and Chile make better wines for your money.

I don't even like CA wines, but balanced CA Pinot is a lot easier to find than ever. That Au Bon Climat Pinot that you see in every CA grocery store is quite balanced. Then there are a lot of smaller wineries like Flowers, Kutch, Littorai, Rhys, Rivers-Marie, and so on making CA Pinots with good acidity and low oak notes. I certainly don't disagree that there are a lot of super oaky CA Pinots; I've had my tongue splintered by my share of commercial Pinots like Meiomi and Belle Glos. However, fine wine is about the small percentage of artisanal wines, not the wine industry as a whole. Just because most domestic shelves are stocked with Wagner family products doesn't mean that CA wines are automatically unbalanced. It just means you need to explore more.

I wouldn't give so much credit to AOC laws. There are a lot of bad or unimpressive wines from AOC regulated regions too, so it's clearly not something you can blindly rely on. There's no substitute for learning and exploring different producers and regions.

I don't think you can fairly compare Beaujolais to Loire Reds because you'd be comparing Gamay to Cab Franc. I like both of them, but they aren't interchangeable. I specifically warned about Nouveau and straight Beaujolais because those are truly shitty. The joke is that good Beaujolais doesn't have "Beaujolais" on the label. The only Beaujolais worth drinking is the single village stuff, aka cru Beaujolais, and the price creeps certainly confirm this (it's a lot more difficult to find good ones <$20). I highly doubt a beginner would enjoy Loire Cab Franc because of the herbaceous character and high acid, so I suggested Beaujolais because it's a lot more inoffensive.

>> No.6640359

>I highly doubt a beginner would enjoy Loire Cab Franc because of the herbaceous character and high acid

Remember that OP enjoys white wines.
Saumur Champigny and Gamay (never underestimate gamay de Touraine) may be more up his (her?) alley than you'd expect.

Other than that I wasn't comparing them as interchangeable; I was giving my own opinion, hence

I've harvested grapes in the Beaujolais as a summer job, to this day I'm still unimpressed by the wines of the region. Granted I'm biased towards Loire Valley because I've spent my summers as a kid there, and we still have a cousin that makes wine there.

Pinot noir from Alsace is more a "dark rosé" then a red wine... Its a typical summer wine, you drink it cold like white wines... The only red wine red whine from Alsace is "Rouge d Ottrot" , and I don't think that you will found it outside from Alsace... But just across the border in Pfalz/Germany they start to make some really nice red wines ( due to the temperature raising, red wine grapoes have better conditions, and now they have problems with white wines.. Too much sugar == too much alcohol)

Uhm, no. The spirit is added AFTER fermentation has started, but before it has finished.

If the spirit was added at the very beginning it would never ferment at all--read your own article. The added spirit kills the yeast. Therefore it is obvious that it cannot be added at the beginning, otherwise there wouldn't be any fermentation.

The process is that the wine is fermented just like normal. After the majority (but not all) of the fermentation has taken place the additional spirit is added.

Probably if I had known about Portugal when I was a new drinker and that was all I was interested in, I'd have loved the stuff. But these days I go for medium to light bodied reds since I'm not eating steak and hamburgers 7 days a week anymore. I don't know if they have the geographic diversity to support an enormous range of wine styles in the way that France does, for example.

As for vinho verde I usually get the obligatory bottle at some point during the summer.
