I was hungry

My mother started a long job and just made constant, bland stews. I started cooking for myself, and then my entitled shits of brothers complained that I was 'hogging all the good food' (they never once tried cooking) and eventually I was forced into cooking for the whole family.

been drinking and enjoying scotch for a while, wondered whether i could train my sense of taste to enjoy it even more, figured cooking would probably work and realized cooking can actually be pretty awesome.

in junior high as a young nerdling I realized it was pretty unlikely I'd have anybody to cook for me when I was on my own, so I figured I might as well get a head start and took home ec

[blog] Mom let me help when I was a kid. Was pretty good at it, enjoyed it. First job making bagles, second making bread, part time cooking through college years, half way through degree and I realize all I can get are gubmint jerbs due to proffs, fuckthatshit.jpg, look at other schools, pretty much the same everywhere, culinary school, at_least_I_save_like_a_motherfucker_so_I_can_pay_all_this_off.png, long time on the line, a few Sous jerbs, still cooking, but mostly on the side, still making shit money, still looking for restaurant opportunities like the dumb shit muhfood addict that I am. Owning a restaurant at this point would probably be like a 3 year hate fuck session until she finally learns how to properly ass up, but I still want it.

My first job was as a dishwasher. Helped in prep and made my way to line cook, and then I got out of the food service industry because I didn't feel like killing myself before reaching the age of 30.

Also I got out of my parents' house pretty early to move in with my first gf who cooked a lot.

My mother's inability to cook met with my desire to eat nice food.

A desire to save money in college as well as a healthy competition between me and my roommate during the same period of time. It was awesome, actually. I'm sure both of us became decent home cooks purely because we continually sought to impress each other.

Once I got out of college and needed to cook for myself I just went with it and started trying lots of different stuff.

When all us kids were in the "I want to be a fireman/astronaut/duke nukem" phase I wanted to be Chef. I don't think I'll be a Chef now, but I enjoy cooking enough to hang out with muh buddies on /ck/.

Just asked for a promotion to line cook, if I don't get it I'm gonna apply elsewhere.

>> No.6620322

got a job as a dishwasher. eventually moved up to the line and got really interested in the creative aspects of it, creating dishes and plating. been cooking for a year now and I still feel like a noob.

the industry pays fucking nothing and since I work the night shift it's made me into something of a zombie, so I don't plan on staying very long, but I do want to stay long enough to become a decent cook. Maybe 2ish more years. The way I'm looking at it is I'm getting paid to learn how to cook, and that's something all those culinary school faggots can't say.

Is Jiro even actually a good chef or is he just good at buying the most expensive fish.

>> No.6620337

Moved out, couldn't' afford to eat out all the time, but figured I should probably do my best to eat good food anyway. Pretty much all there is to it. Kinda baffled that so many people my age are perfectly okay with eating frozen dinners and cereal for every meal they don't eat out.

Nah, he just does a lot of stuff that's different and is really disciplined. iirc his son just buys one tuna at the fish market and its got the fat content that old school sushi people would use while the trendy sushi places use fattier stuff for the sweetness.

He also apparently uses a specific kind of rice that his rice dealer only sells to him. In the movie he also admits that his guys in the back room do like 80% of the work, but its his methods that they do it with.

Its been a while since I've watched the movie, I may be making this up.

I had the flu and wanted some spicy chicken noodle soup and realized I only had salt, pepper and oregano in my spice rack.

Went to the store and bough garlic powder, chili flakes and coriander seeds since I they were the only things I recognized as asian-ey-ish and made a very disappointing mixture.

Decided I might put in some effort into learning how to cook actually good food.

In high school I wanted to get better at cooking than my dad. Also so that I could live on my own without eating out every night.
