While I don't use ketchup in my sauce (I use tomato paste and vinegar though), I think BBQ sauce is one of the few proper uses of ketchup. Fuck vinegar sauce, "white" sauce, and people who don't know what proper BBQ sauce is made of.

i've been using a lot of apricot jam in my barbecuing lately.

i often use just a basic spice rub, then glaze the meat with the jam as it cooks.

it's delicious. but i think i can work on it. maybe incorporate some chili and vinegar in there.

BBQ sauces can be completely different depending on what part of the country you are in. For example, in North Carolina, they use vinegar based sauces, and in South Carolina, they use mustard based sauces. The cloyingly sweet kind is like the stuff you get at the supermarket, real BBQ joints don't use it.

If you want something spicy and smokey, i'd recommend you try some texas style bbq sauce. Rudy's (a chain in texas but has good sauce) sells theirs online, if you're anxious to try something like that.
