Could you describe what it's like to eat an oyster?
Also, I heard that eating fresh is the most important thing, but I live in Ohio. Is it possible?

Sure it's possible. I live in Chicago and it's not much trouble. Don't, however, eat them with a fucking lime like your picture.

As for what they're like it's like eating a chewy, wet, floppy pillow of sweet, briney flesh. I don't really know how better to describe it, might not sound good but I love them.

Yes it's more than possible. Oysters are put on ice and stay alive for weeks. When they get the store/restaurant they are still alive so they are still fresh. They taste briny and seafoody with a slimy, meaty texture. It takes getting used to but they are fucking delicious.

>>6606442
It's both briny and almost rich and very fresh, almost refreshing (which seems oddly contradictory to the first two descriptors).

I ate mine with a bit of lemon, what's wrong with that?

You know when your allergies are acting up and you have a clogged nose then you have a random harsh inhale through the nose ad end up with a blob of mucus in the back of your mouth?

That's what oyster taste and feel like, sometimes with a touch of sand.

I like them and i don't know why. Same thing with mussels and clams, it's just a slimy piece of meat that tastes like the ocean, but god damnit a drop of lemon and they are fucking delicious.

The casino here has fresh oysters on their Saturday night buffet. I've watched people, oddly a lot of them Southeast Asian looking, pile plates high with 20 or 30 at a time. They mostly eat them with lemon and sriracha or tobasco.

I haven't gotten up the stomach to try them raw. I love fried oysters, but the taste and especially the texture is supposed to be way different than raw.

I've seen some people put cocktail sauce on them, but that doesn't seem like a great pairing.

both oysters and dirty martinis remind me of drowning but in a good way. its like when you get hit by a wave and draw the sea water in your mouth just short of inhaling it, then panic and surface, glad to be alive.

It tastes if the sea, in the best way possible. Immediate transport to a sandy tropical beach where you are fanned by beautiful women in skimpy clothes while clutching a perfectly cold beer.

Slip a paring knife under the meat to detach the muscle and tip it right back. Chew three times, max, and swallow. Once you get a feel for it, try salt and a bit of lemon. Step it up with a dash of hot or Worcestershire sauce. Sprinkle with cheese and broil. Really dude. Eat oysters

Oysters are beautiful. By far my favorite food and also incredibly healthy, if I could afford it I would pound 2 dozen a week EASY

fresh is the only way to consume them. you dig your knife into the hinge and pop off the lid, and immediately slurp the brine. It takes you right back to the place it was harvested and is the most refreshing thing imaginable. as you start to chew you get a wonderful bite in the back of your mouth and you start salivating. The closest thing I could equate it to is a very sharp cheddar when it makes that *smack* feeling in the very back near the molars.

Oysters are one of the cleanest protein sources (if harvested in a pollution free area) and you are eating the whole organism instead of just the muscle of an animal like most Americans (steak). Also very high in Zinc and DHA, and your brain and CNS are 3 pounds of DHA. If you are already eating a very clean diet and you add in oysters you will notice a difference in how you feel.

NOW I WANT OYSTERS FUCK

They're good but a bit chewy and slimy. Have you had canned oysters? The taste is the same but less 'concentrated' and briny.
On the rare occasion I get them I eat them with a bit of lemon and pepper. Sometimes Tabasco.

As long as before they're served they're alive you're fine. You don't want oysters that have been dead in someone's fridge, they'll likely make you sick.
I really like them, but if you don't like seafood much in general they're not likely to change your mind.

OP, Ohio just means that, like in most parts of the continent, the places that serve fresh oysters got em frozen from somewhere else. It's still fine, they just shouldn't smell/taste fishy. The first time you eat them, squeeze lemon juice and pour cocktail or marinara sauce on top, and detach the oyster from the shell with a fork, swirl it around, and drink from the shell.

Try them in several different ways too. It's almost like sushi in a way where you normally start with rolls and work your way to nigri and sashimi.

With osyters it goes, fried>Steam>Raw/Broiled I think. Frying and cooking them makes them taste differently and sort of drys out the slimy part. But raw is like slimy, tastes like sand almost but in a good way, and fish and a little bit of sea water.

Also people aren't kidding -- it makes you horny. There is a reason they serve it at Hooters. Try them on a date next time.

Huh? I didn't know all the health benefits.

But I saw this episode of No Reservations where these guys in South Carolina, in Charleston got this oysters for $20 a bussel and that was like 50 or so. But they were fresh from the dock, like buying them in bulk.

You can do that in Florida too. My old boss had a beach house where down the road was an oyster bar, like a bar out on the sand connected to a dock where fisherman sold fresh seafood, everything you can think of. My old boss is really cool and chill and befriended them so now they give her huge bags of fresh gulf shrimp and oysters every time she's there. She used take them home and load me and my friends up with them too. But the restaurant next to the dock sells them like right from the ocean too, best I've ever had.

I'm a real slut for some good oysters.

The aphrodisiac thing is a myth.
Also, I hate oysters. I serve local fresh oysters all the time. I try one at least once a year just to see if I still hate them. Still do.

It's kind of a crazy experience eating a raw oyster though and I recommend trying it. As the other dude said, it tastes briny and can be gritty if the person who shucked them did a shitty job. They're slimy and kind of rubbery. Each type tastes a bit different though, so it's worth researching and possibly starting with a mild oyster and then moving on to a more briny type.
Yes, they should be as fresh as possible. They should be alive when you open them.

Nobody ever said oysters had aphrodisiac properties for women. It's just supposed to give you better erections.

It sort of does over time, because of its zinc content, but there's no evidence to show that it helps immediately after consumption.

If folk get to New York City go to the oyster bar in Grand Central, it's a pretty beautiful place, there aren't many like it left.
