Ethanol is odorless and tasteless. Is does not taste, what people are tasting are impurities and metabolic byproducts, even in triple distilled vodka.

The acquired taste thing is more about associating a certain effect with an action. Once that action, or agent, and its consumption is wired into your mind as proxy to the desired result, your perception of its taste changes.

I drink vodka straight, with no chaser nor mixer. Right out of the bottle. Whiskey I have a bit of trouble with, or at least I used to. Same with rum. They don't taste "bad" so much as just making me gag.

This is less a matter of the biology of taste, and more a matter of psychology (and by extension neurology). Perception is key.

We'll get there, eventually, once we get this overreaction to post-prohibition flushed out of our system. You can already find many decent balanced beers around and it's only getting better. By the time our kids are of drinking age they'll be posting "beer gore" threads on the future version of 4chan, filled with pictures of mid-2010s Surly Naga Jholokia Cunt Destroyer Three Mile Island Nuclear Toxic Wasteland ale, much as we post these pictures of jello and ketchup casserole from the 50s.

>I'm not the kind of beer drinker that wants an IPA every time I'm in a drinking mood, I see that as more of a special treat
I agree with this. I'm reasonably knowledgeable about beer and try a lot of different kinds, I love IPAs, stouts and porters, but I still drink cheap lager most of the time.

It's pretty rich. And very dark. If those sound like the sort of thing you like with beer, then hell yes it's worth it. It is a little pricy, but aren't most of the "higher" shelf drinks anyway. Treat yourself. It's better than some of the similar attempts by Samuel Smith's or Rogue for chocolate stouts. I love SS Oatmeal Stout and they make my favorite oatmeal stout but as far as I'm concerned, Young's has the upper hand in the chocolate stout department, by far.

I've been coming to a realization that beer tastes good when you're feeling bitter. In a "you are what you drink" kind of way.
When I'm happy, drinking kind of throws off the feeling.
When not happy, drinking is much easier. Tastier maybe.

>the taste buds really dislike the flavor bitter as a child; we're adaptive eaters so things that are bitter are more likely to be poisonous. as kids we're expected to be fed what adults have tried and found safe to eat, so over time, as we eat those, we begin to enjoy the flavor of them. anybody who's ever tried to cut salt out of their diet and succeeded knows that after a few weeks of changing diet, your tastes adjust. theoretically this is supposed to keep us safe from eating dangerous things- also works with rotten meat or foods... some cultures like the fermented/bad tastes despite it being a warning sign at first for us to spit it out.

tldr; once you eat/drink something and it doesn't kill you, you're more inclined to find it tastes good in the future.

I feel like most people who like beer like the taste of beer in general ("good" beer and cheap beer) but just have personal preferences for certain kinds that they do drink for the taste

I 100% like the taste of cheap piss-lager as well as craft/microbrews of all kinds, but only buy the cheap stuff because I'm a kike

I drink to get drunk, if someone offered me a top quality beer I would of course drink it and enjoy it but I'm not willing to pay more to have my 12 pack I'm going to slam taste slightly better

Basically yes people drink beer for the taste you fuckwit, most people who drink beer genuinely like the taste of beer

It's relatively cheap and inoffensive, but once you've tried anything actually good, you'll realize just how bland and tasteless it really is. If you're used to much lighter beers, go for it just to get the idea of what a stout is, but remember that it is far from what your average stout will be like if you're getting quality beer.

But I do. Beer without alcohol tastes weird. Refreshing lagers can get away with 4-5% alcohol, but a lot of the richer styles, like oatmeal stout and dubbel, seem cloying to me at less than 9%. I also really like the warming sensation of ethanol in these higher ABV beers.

Same with mulled wine on a cold winter day; it just wouldn't be the same without the alcohol.

Also, vodka with the right accompaniments is amazing. Pickles, herring, onions, garlic, rye bread, cured lard, potatoes...
