I dislike this word. I dislike it being used in context with food.

it's used to describe a hip bar that also serves food. usually you see it in brooklyn and london etc.

yes.
example:
Rosemary butter would be savory, not umami.
an unseasoned medium rare steak is umami, not savory

I work in a gluten-free bakery
95% of our customers are people with celiac disease and crohn's disease
we have a couple of vegans though
>i'm not going to eat 90% of food because of a meme!
vegans are truly scum.
like my boss says, gluten intolerance is a disorder, veganism is a choice.

Basically being overly pretentious about food gets me pretty damn salty.

kind of, yes. it's the flavor profile of iron and proteins found normally in meat and mushrooms. MSG enhances this flavor pretty substantially.
savory, on the other hand, refers more generally to a non-sweet, non-piquant flavor derived from many herbs, spices and seasonings.

Many savory things have umami. Many umami things are savory. But they aren't the same thing.

That said, we need an actual english word for it that doesn't sound stupid as fuck, because the loanword is, at best, tryhard bullshit sounding.

I've always wondered why so many people find the word moist unpleasant. It's a widespread phenomena and I've never understood it.

I don't get bothered about it in general contexts, but when used with food, it somehow conjures up an image of a slice of white bread that's been spat on.

The worst fucking phrases in the history of language come from American governmental agencies.

"Shovel Ready Projects".
"Marsec Level Orange". (A level of maritime security)
"Boutique Fuels".(Gasoline blended for higher altitudes or higher ground temperatures. )

Nothing to do with food, but annoying as a wooden legged busker doing toffee apple impressions.

Uh, what's wrong with that? Some people have celiac disease and wheat sensitivity, you know. I agree though that people who cut gluten out (and don't even know what it is) just because are idiots.
