Well, for a start you can't write off income. You can declare income and then deduct business expenses from that total. Then you pay tax on the balance.

So he gets 50 bucks. That is his income. He has to pay taxes on the 50. He eats 10 bucks and writes it off. Now he has to pay taxes on the 40. If he donates the 40, he pays no more taxes on that portion of his income, because he spent it either as a husiness expense or as a charitable donation.

In Canada you can do that. If he's operating under a sole proprietorship or even a partnership it's perfectly fine. People do this all the time. Tim hortons summer camps? Tax deductible. University grants a scholarship? Same thing.

But you have to have an income to to write off against. You can't run a business into a negative tax situation. You can't "write off" more than you have as income. So your double dipping doesn't work. You can't turn a 50 dollar donation into more than 50 dollars worth of write offs and you have to have a second 50 in income to write it off against.

And as for writing off car washes as a business expense? Every single big truck that gets washed at blue beacon or other truck wash places... guess what? Those are business expenses. Fuel too, business expenses. Tires and oil and roadside repairs.

That doesn't mean you get to eliminate those expenses by tax deductions, it means that if I make 1000 dollars total and have 500 dollars expenses I pay tax only non that remaining 500, my profits.
