Quit wendy's three months ago after telling my cunt manager to go fuck herself and left mid shift. Didn't feel bad because she'd sent two closers home already becsuse she 'didn't like them' and was screaming at me all night. She refused to open front and drive thru sections on a massive busy night (my store usually got 50 to ~70 dollar orders like crazy when there was a game nearby.

Refused to help. Just snatched sandwiches outof my hands and dropped a bunch and yelled constantly. Had also thrown away ALL veggie prep from morning shift when she got there because thanksgiving wss the next day, so was running back and forth using the sharp as hell tomato slicer whenever i had a second.

When she screamed that i wasn't going fast enough in the middle of about 20 jr bacons i just snapped and left. Fast food never fuckin again.

No they don't, and they shouldn't be slacking all day in the first place. Beyond the economics that you do not grasp, it leaves in place an easily exploited system with no oversight, and opens the employer up to tax penalties if not properly recorded.

>At first glance, tipping appears to benefit the workers being tipped. It's a simple voluntary transfer from the tipper to the tippee.

>One level deeper, it looks like the benefits goes instead to the employer. The addition of tipping raises total compensation, so the employer can cut back on wages and benefits by an amount equal in the workers' perceptions to the value of their tips.

>However, tipping is also effectively a price increase. Assuming demand curves slope downwards, this reduce quantity sold unless McDonald's cuts their list prices to compensate for the tips. Probably the latter, since McDonald's presumably sets their prices at the level they expect to maximize revenue.

>Taking all this into account:

>The buyer is trading increased transaction costs (having to figure out how much to tip) for the ability to directly reward or punish the employee by varying the tip amount (which may result in better service). May be a benefit or a loss, depending on the customer.

>The employee gets higher variance in compensation, since a portion of their pay is now dependant on how much their customer chooses to tip. Total compensation is probably slightly higher, to offset the increased variance. On average, this is probably a wash.

>McDonald's suffers menu costs from adjusting their list prices and wage schedule, and they may gain or lose customer base at the same after-tip prices depending on how their marginal customers weigh the pros/cons of tipping. Probably a loss, based on the assumption that McDonald's policy of not encouraging tipping is rational.

Granted this does not happen over night, nor does it mention that it indirectly gives help to the competition, and the drastically different expectations of customer service between sit-downs and fast food.

I was the manager, but the owner wanted control over who was hired / fired / schedules

So in reality, I was a manager in that I had to deal with the angry customers and do all the orders and discipline employees, but I could only issue "warnings" which didn't mean shit at all since the pothead fucker had like 57 some odd warnings from me by the time I left.

The owner LITERALLY told me that he didn't want me to have too much power as a manager and that he is the owner in his fucking broken english. One acts like it's my fault when he has to do a TON of shit after my shift ends and I've busted my ass off. He even filed a few complaints with the manager about me "slacking off". Manager never even spoke to me about it because he knew it's bullshit.

The other just pretends he's super busy with important stuff even though I know he's just being an inefficient asshole who wants to hang out with the girls. I don't mind it as much as the first guy, but it's annoying when you see him getting all stressed when work starts piling up.

What pisses me off is that I genuinely cared about the image and the health of the fucking business. The owner was just about EXPENSES, PROFIT and had no clue about how improving the place could increase his profits. I feel stupid for caring so much when the owner didn't really.

>he gets his fruit from driving from San Bernardino to Los Angeles wholesale food district to get the quality fruit right from distributor
>it's a couple more dollars, but the fruit is always fresh, lasts a long time, delicious
>owner of the store starts complaining about how fruit is too expensive and slowly starts going to costco to save on fruit prices, but he isn't really saving because we lose like 1/5th of it to spoilage, bland flavors, obviously poor quality, customers even begin to notice
>i tell the owner that its not worth it, but his pocket book says otherwise
>at the point where he is only fucking ordering like a case of raspberries from the Iranian guy, yet he's still kind enough to drive out there and go out of his way to deliver to our shop in hopes we might order more
>eventually he gets fed up (fucking surprising because the old Iranian guy is easily the nicest man i've genuinely ever met) and tells the owner that he no longer will bring us any more fruit because he isn't ordering enough and isn't worth the drive
>owner is legitimately surprised and upset that the armenian quit and complained about how we have been long time customers despite making him drive a good 20 minutes out of the way for fucking $12 box of raspberries and that "he bad businessman"

your stories made me remember my old FOB korean landlord, it was aggravating and often confusing ordeal.

he refused to let me hang my TV on the wall even the wall mount used adhesives that don't damage the wall

I see him a few days later nails plastic carpet protecters INTO the brand new carpet he got done.

Once month it rained heavily and the basement flooded a few feet. The floor drain where the water coming from could only accommodate one electric pump I had and did not pump water out fast enough.

Once the basement was cleaned out, instead of getting a sump pump installed, he just got his migrant korean workman to cut a big hole in the concrete floor around the drain so it accommodate more electric pumps next time it flooded. It flooded numerous times after that.

Another fun story:
>late night, im at home
> get a call from employee that police are here, need to speak with manager
>i rush out in my sleeping wear, which is just a pair of sleeping pants and white shirt
>store is literally 3 blocks from where i live
>police is there, a lady got her purse jacked from her car outside our store
>lady is crying, police point out that we have surveillance cameras attached to the roof of our store that point to the shop, they would like me to access it
>I only have access to the inner store cameras since they are in the office, never seen the outdoor ones anywhere, tell them Ill call the owner and ask him where they are
>call owner, he's annoyed that i call him this late at night
>i mention what happen and he doesn't seem to care, but as soon as i say police he goes POLICE WHAT HAPPEN
> i tell him to tell me where i can extract the footage from the camera thats pointing to the parking lot
> he tells me that the camera is fake, its just there to deter criminals from spraying graffiti on the wall (which didn't work because the windows are covered in knife marks)
>my heart fucking sinks to the ground
> i tell the officer and he gives me this look of disgust, the lady who got jacked starts crying again because we pretty much realize that shes not going to get anything back

Mini story:
>employee gets held up at gun point one evening
>employee opens register and gives him the money

The owner had 4 cameras which pointed AT THE cash registers from different angles to ensure employees didn't steal any money. he had 3 in the kitchen area to make sure people didn't slack off.

He had one pointing at ONE of the TWO doors in the customer area.

And he remote accessed them frequently from his home and would report to me anyone he thought was not working hard enough, or would call them directly and tell them to stop slacking off and do some work.

I've worked on a line in a real restaurant and a fast food place. trust me when I say I would much rather give you the finger for being this kind of asshole to the fast food worker than to the restaurant one. Restaurant jobs are easier, in the corporate modle of fast food it is nothing like a restaurant and more like being part of an impossible school grading system. you are expected to smile, come up with a new welcome phrase on the fly rather than a stock one, maintain eye contact, greet the customer in 5 seconds (which gets hilarious when you factor in the difference in space between the rest of your responsabilities) upsale products even when they already said "I just want this to go thats all" get the customers drink before they finish paying for their meal, make sure all areas are mopped and swept to the point where there is no more than 3 obvious blemishes in the whole lobby, you will be penalized for not doing this no matter how busy you are, inlcuding the bathrooms and any grafiti the chuckle fucks do, same rule applies in duplicate to the parking lot, where any cigarrette and random trash left above 3 at the time of your audit gets you a red x for that. you must deliver your food to the drive through within 50 seconds to 75 seconds no matter how big their order is, and you are penalized heavily if the car sits there after youve handed the food over while the customer picks their nose. you are penalized for every mis-touch on the menu screen even if you delete it and change it to the right product, or if the customer just wants to change their product to something else. you are penalized for each smuge mark on a window or reflective surface you are penalized if they use a cupon, you are penalized if your trash bins are 75% full, you (one person) are expected to do almost every responsability here except drive through at all times, your customers will be variable, but it doesn't matter if you are busy, if the auditor comes, you'll get served.

Nope, verbal arguments but I never lose my cool.
It's way to satisfying having some ape yelling in your face and you not giving any reaction.

I let them finish and then point out that their behaviour towards me just then violates our customer policies or something along those lines and that their behaviour warrants me asking them to leave and then calling for police assistance if they don't go quietly.

At this point security is around the corner and most people put their heads down and walk out.

the addition of customers makes work especially stressful becuase you must stop whatever you are doing, let them walk all over the area you just mopped greet them, take their order, go out, mop for another 3 seconds, and have another customer show up..

The problem isn't the individual steps, the problem is that they are all expected as a minimum requirement, this isn't "you do all these and you're golden" but you'll do all these or we're going to penalize you very heavy, and if you fail we'll get you some new management. The manager knows their neck is on the line, they dont care if what they want is impossible, their job is to push you to do and do and do. it seems to make the people who manage there insane, I've been called out a good handfull of times to do something a different way because if we don't we;re going to recieve down marks, but the manager doesn't seem to put the effort in to fixing the sanitizer dispenser for the washing station.

I sometimes hypothesis that this whole thing is rigged to vet managers in order to be slave drivers. see which ones crack under pressure, and which ones are comfortable holding a blade against a table grinder and using up more and more wheels of the grinder. picking up new blood as the old is spilt. which one can get the employees to quit first or meet expectations. (since firing and the like is undesirable, you wind up with cut hours). which ones can juggle the impossible assortment of tasks the best. Its certainly not designed to be winnable.

Most restuarants expect you to keep up with one situations work flow, and be able and willing to help another person do something on the fly. when shit gets rough, you are normally side by side with your superior battling it out, not under the lense of some dispassionate asshole counting every small error. you will be appricaited for cleaning all those things in the first paragraph, but aren't expected to have it done during a rush or suffer.

Thats if they don't want anything that takes more time than usual, a single freezie takes 5-10 seconds to fill and assemble, Some people order 5-6 of them in the drive through, you better hope it doesn't need to go through a defrost cycle. and you better pray to whatever lord or sky wizard you worship that they don't take their sweet ass time idling while your counter clocks in more time despite being on target moments earlier.

Technically the bartender is legally responsible to cut him off if the guy is too drunk (in my state at least, I'm sure that varies).

The caveat though: all you have to say is "He said he had had a ride and didn't look that drunk" and you'll be fine. You're not employed as a police officer and unless you're forcing the guy to drink you can't be considered, legally, and judge of what "too drunk" is because unless you're doing and DUI test you have no way of confirming it.

It costs about $114,600 – $298,900 to open one, and the franchises are closing faster than they're opening- they even talk about "failure before success" a lot on their own blog, alluding to the fact that the businesses are not doing well. Considering how long FFH has been established, they should be more stable at this point.

It seems like the type of franchise that's sold to people who don't really know what they're doing, under the guise of being "gourmet"- the people profiting are the ones at the top.

Now I sell insurance and when you quote out a business or a person's professional liability you are sometimes required to become very intimate with the workings of their enterprise.

Hah, this chump doesn't know that as long as there is a demand for fast food there will be badly paid fast food jobs. As long as those jobs exist there will need to be people to fill them. That means if you consume fast food, you support a system that underpays its workers for a job that includes a huge stress load with minimum compensation. If they were properly compensated, then they could likely afford more healthy habits and live less stressful lives and maybe even raise their children in a healthier environment than the one they grew up in, but that would raise the cost of fast food, and lower profits for the massive chains. Maybe that would open up competition for local chains and startups, but that's terrible for big business.

All I'm saying is you're looking really damn ignorant when you shit talk people working a job that is "necessary" to society. You don't know what is like to live through generations of poverty, without the benefit of a safe environment, and no social structure to help besides the church, school, or the local gangs to give you a sense of purpose.

I don't eat fast food cheif. I mean I used to when I was younger but don't anymore. Those jobs aren't career. The only payable quality is working under high stress for a couple hours straight but that isn't something you go and get training for. It's a entry level job. Its ment for you to eitger move up or find something better. It would be like feeling bad for the dishwasher that stays a dishwasher after 5 years and went no where. If anything its a symptom of of a bigger problem where that's the only viable option for income. Plus you think most fast food is ran by some cartel if board members in a smoky room thinking how can I fuck over the little guy. Most are franchised genius. Also a burger flipper or fry cook is not a necessary job to society. A mason is necessary, cashier for McDonald's isn't.

>> No.6324573

>>6324461
Yeah, it's a problem of the system. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just the most profitable way to run the business of fast food. I don't think it's a cartel or anything, but one should consider that all fast food joints profit from low competitive wages. The people in charge aren't some cartoon fat cat business men, they're just in the business of making the most profit for their shareholders and themselves for as long as possible. It is a major source of income inequality in America, or at least a major contributor.

After working in a grocery store that started up four years ago and has quickly spread like a fungus through the Chicago land area I've seen how the machine eats people up, gets all it can out of them, and once they break they're through. They let a known sexual offender work in my store for two years until the complaints piled up and they tried to fire him. He sued the shit out of the store with a discrimination suit (short greasy fat hispanic with a tiny filthy mustache) right as they were planning an IPO. Of course they dropped everything and he did produce results by being an absolute asshole and micromanaging every department he walked into. Eventually there were too many complaints by both male and female employees that they had to fire him. This is not an uncommon story. It seems like the best managers in these high stress low pay jobs all have some sort of mental problem.

I wouldn't need chefs, that would be my job to develop the menu, the recipes and to teach my workers the proper technique. What I would need are workers who can follow procedures, maintain a clean workspace, work under pressure, and communicate with customers. I agree with you for the most part, I also have an IT degree and most of the people who I graduated with were only paper qualified. Most were terrified of programming, had poor diagnostic skills, and no customer service/sales experience. Most of my classmates in culinary need a few years working in the industry to fill in the holes in their skillset, attitude, and work habits. Personally I think everyone should put in at least a year in fast food but everyone else thinks it is beneath them which I think is ridiculous.

Personally I would open a small cafe. Food is important but my absolute priority would be on service and the front end experience. I would look for a small location adjacent to an office building or a high traffic commercial building.

My goal would not be to provide the best food but rather the best dining experience. The food quality and portions would be adequate but I would focus on adding value through service and proper presentation rather than costly ingredients or complicated recipes.

This is why I would want polished, well rounded employees rather than prima donnas or all-stars.

To me quality service starts with proper training which is something I've thought corporate franchises have refined very well. Basically, picture the ideal of service that a restaurant chain would provide because that is what I would be using as a goal marker as well.

My primary goal of service would be attentiveness, to a customer the clock starts ticking the moment they decide they are ready, which means every second it takes the server to notice them is a second longer they have to wait.

The next highest priority is communication skills. Servers would need to speak comfortably with guests. Training would basically be based on sales training, not so much to make upsells so much as on how to develop a rapport with a guest and social skills.

Part of my business plan would mandate a location within next to an office/commercial building or a bank without needing to cross a street. This is because I would be focused on convenience and walk-in business rather than destination dining.

I anticipate that a majority of the business would come from to-go coffee and bakery orders in the morning between 7am to 9am. After that I would transition to simplified to-go lunch orders with a more specialized menu for dine-in customers.

The key concept I'm focusing on with service is that people hate feeling like they are being ignored.

One problem I ran into in school about a month ago is people are ridiculously slow in the short order section, sometimes orders take 20 min or more to go out. Customers get very irritated because they stand their waiting with no updates and half the time they just get their money back and leave.

When I handle an order I keep an eye on the customer and watch their body language. If necessary I go back and check on their order's progress and give them an update. If there is a problem I immediately tell them and apologize for the delay. If there was a problem or a delay I personally take the order to them when it's finished and apologize for the error/delay.

So you see, it's not really about speed although that is also important. It's about showing them personal attention as though they are the only customer in the restaurant.

Well that's because those weren't planned economies, Detroit was based on the auto industry and experienced urban decay with it's decline. Government couldn't sustain it because it they were never the primary source of business activity. However in towns near military bases or a state funded university, Government is the primary source of business activity.

Anyway, I agree that government isn't the basis for economic activity but unrestrained business activity would be pretty scary to live through. As a simple example, imagine if there were no rules about business signage or commercial zoning.

Well in terms of volume of business I estimate that it would be about 80% walk-in to-go customers (most between 7am to 9am in the morning) and 20% dine in destination diners. With the to-go diners the goal is to complete orders quickly to maximize volume, however speed, quality, and service are all important so you don't lose customers to coffee made at home or at work. With the dine in customers the goal is to provide an ideal dining experience rather than flat-out speed. The reason for this is to justify higher item prices and maximize margin.

Look moron, to start with Louisana, that state is in the iron death grip of the conservatards, and I literally mean that. they teach creationism in schools as a state policy there. Just because social policies exist in a state does not make them geared towards commerce. That goes for federal too. I never claimed governments do everything right, but you still have nothing to say about the specific aspects I mentioned. which unfortunately for you makes your arguements irrelevant. theyre a criticism and maybe even a valid one, but its irrelevant to my points, which so far you have yet to even comment on. It was you who said government spending hurts the economy, please back your ass up and explain the scenario I outlined. by your logic, it should be wrong, and you should have no problem telling me why instead of wasting my time.

Well as I said it's not just about speed per say, lets say the order itself didn't take long to make but when you arrived it took 15 sec to get the staff's attention because they were playing on their phone and after your order hit the window it took another 15 seconds for them to get it and give it to you. The 30 seconds is really nothings but if I were the customer every seconds I had to wait but didn't need to would really irritate me. Attentiveness (but not hovering) is one of those things that I think is the hallmark of good service.

We are talking restaurants. Lets say you walk into a restaurant and it takes you a few minutes to get seated, not because they needed to prep a table but it took them that long to notice you and bring you to a table. They seat you, bring you a menu and water promptly and you look at the menu. After a few minutes you look up and are ready to order. The server isn't looking at you and is either playing with their phone or talking to other staff, obviously not about an order. After a minute of trying to catch their eye they obviously aren't paying attention. Finally you catch their attention and place your order.

The food isn't even there yet and I would already be put off. If my goal were superior service, these are exactly the places I would be looking to make the improvements because in a sense it's low hanging fruit. It doesn't cost anything more to have servers pay attention

Your boss was right to fire you, you little shit.

Putting a tip jar on the counter hits that part of a customer's brain that tells them "If I don't give this faggot a dollar, he's going to shit in my food next time I come here." To add onto that anxiety, their $3 burger now costs $4, so they start to think "Well now that $3.50 burger at jack-in-the-box doesn't sound so bad..."

Now the customers are fucking off to greener pastures where they don't get guilted by your eyes darting between them and the tip jar. Your tips start drying up, the restaurant's making less money, and they can no longer justify as much kitchen staff as they used to. They fire a somebody (who is now making NO money thanks to your fucking retarded tip idea) and now you retards have to pick up the slack because you thought you knew consumer trends better than the executives who dictate corporate policy.

I pretty much gave up when i was getting fucked up orders from the owners son('Peanut butter parfait without chocolate'... 5 minutes later.... Even more fucked up part was the son(He was in his mid 20's) was a pedo who was trying to groom me when i first started. Showed me a bunch of porno mags(with pages stuck together :/) and asked if my dick was getting hard. He was busted a few years later trying to fuck his 12 year old cousin.

My experience as well. Worked produce for 6 years. Most fun job I've had.

Some of the customers are assholes but most of them are very grateful if you do manage to help them out. Our store wasn't part of a "huge" chain, and was medium sized. This combined with the fact that the management there were okay with me being self reliant meant that I could have solved that turnip problem easily by making a custom sticker. (not on my third day on the job tho)

I've had people yell, bitch and moan at me occasionally for things being out of stock, the pricing being wrong, them thinking the pricing is wrong be cause they don't have the patience to read, them trying to scam the store (this usually went poorly)

Also sometimes I felt like people just looked for an excuse to complain and maybe get free stuff. Normally I'd take their complaint seriously and replace their stuff for free, like say they said the apples they bought 2 days ago were already rotten. However I don't trust this for a second time, and definitely not for a third. Management was chill about me giving away free things on my own, which sped things up significantly and that in turn kept customers satisfied.

I've always been taught to be polite in a situation like yours. Never have I ever told a customer to eat shit, or even been impolite. Not even the time some old hag tried to be deliberately obnoxious, slow / fast, and pretend forgetful just to scam me out of 35 euros when I was working the register. If I did come to a point where I couldn't say anything nice I'd just walk away.
