Hello /ck/ I come from lands far away, asking for aid. I've gotten myself into a predicament and perhaps you peoples can help me through it. I recently got fired and am in dire need of a job to pay the rent - I live in a town full of restaurants and so today I went and applied at basically every one of them.

It went very well, because I bullshitted about my culinary experience.I have two interviews on Monday, one on Tuesday and one on Wednesday, but I'm a mediocre cook at best. I probably have about 20% of the knowledge they're asking for. I've cooked at two restaurants so I know what saute and puree means and I know how to throw burgers on a grill and to make other rudimentary items, but that's about it. I need tips from you cooks on how to become a 3 star chef in a very short amount of time so that I can get through these shifts and get hired. Do ya'll have any tips that might help me do this, besides taking speed? Because I'm definitely going to do that, but I need more insurance. Have any of you ever been thrown into a kitchen and made it out with a job? Help me /ck/

Skills dont lie. They will know immediately and you will be up shit creek.

You are best off telling them that you have kitchen experience but you want to start in prep or pantry until you get up to speed.

After that, dont make mistakes twice, get the wax out of your ears and run your ass off to show them you are willing.

Most kitchens put hard worker and reliability over bling knife skillz and knowing all the lingo.

It's a really shit story. I got a better job than I had, so I put in my two weeks at the job I currently had.. then, I didn't go the last three days because I figured I'd never see these people again, but then my manager CALLED my other job and told them and talked a bunch of shit about me and so I lost the job I quit the first job for.

Yep that's pretty much what I figure is going to happen, thanks for the dose of realism

Don't bs. tell the truth and shame the devil. As an employer I'd rather the whole bitter truth than a lie. Everyone messes up, Me included. Just don't lie. lost a good job that way. Don't lie. It will surely catch up. just be yourself. might be good enough.Probably pretty good.don't lie.My Dad(28 year cop ) tought me.I can forgive anything but a lie. It means you don't trust me, or others. ti's tough, always tough. if it was easy, everyone would do it..

Since you didn't go to the last three days of your other job, I think you'd be quite familiar and comfortable with not going to the interview

Anything short of saying "yes he worked here during X time" is extremely dumb on the employers part because they can and do get sued bad for commenting about performance. They can say you got fired or let go but outside of that it's a law suit waiting to happen. Why this is I don't know but there's a good chance you could sue the hell out of them for doing that.

>>6255835

A lot depends on the restaurant and what they want you to do. You could get lucky and just have to prep and make some easy shit or they might want you to do more advanced techniques in which case you're fucked in the short term.

They are but if what they say stuff that is damaging they can be sued for it. Like I said I don't know why this is exactly but I've had multiple employers and HR departments tell me this. 1 company had a policy that normal employees could not comment about a former employee when asked and had to transfer the person asking to the HR dept where they would just say 'yes he/she worked here at that position for X time' and nothing more.

Small companies tend to worry less and might comment negatively but most large companies have strict policies against anything more than confirming/denying the persons position and time.

>>6256537
they can also say if the employee would be rehired

if you call another employer to update that from yes to no people aren't fucking stupid and realize that the subject is a fuckup

I did a little research and if they say negative stuff that can't be backed up then they can be sued for libel/slander. If it's true then it's fair game. So if they say 'he worked here but was frequently late' and they can show you punched in late 1/3 of the time there then it's fair game. But if you were a model employee the entire time and just bailed a few days early on your 2 week notice and they say 'he was a shit employee and a real piece of shit' then that's a potential suit.

The reason most large companies have strict policies commenting on former employees is because they don't even want to risk a suit.

2 week notices are a courtesy also, not required, so your former employer really was a piece of shit to do that.
