I can only guess, but I'd have to say it has to do with assholes like me going to the grocery store and buying my drink and chips, and then going to Subway and spending the absolutely bare minimum for a footlong. It must soak up all their profits. Not that I care. But I'm not spending $3-4 for a 24 oz. drink and small bag of chips when I can spend $2 at the grocery store for a 2 liter of store brand soda (about 79 cents) and chips (a dollar) of pretty much any flavor I want. Picture very, very related.

Maybe they give out the free drink to track what sodas are the most popular so they can offer promotions. For instance, if they find Coca Cola is selling well, the next time you buy a case of cola at the store, you get a Subway coupon for a dollar off one of their more expensive combos.

The "Subway Melt" and some other hot subs were actually on the menu before Subway started doing the whole "Toasted" thing with the turbochef units. Back then, they'd typically prepare a hot sandwich by assembling meat+cheese on some wax paper and then nuking it. (Or, they'd assemble it on the bread and nuke the whole thing if you asked.) It sounds gross, but keep in mind that the turbochef is just a fancy microwave with hot air convection to crisp the bread.

For some bizarre reason a handful of customers prefer the old way- perhaps because they like soft bread. So, some Subway employees, especially ones who've been around forever, will still ask if customers want melts toasted, the alternative being "the old way".

Of course, if you're asking for something that could just as well be served cold, like a tuna melt, it could just be that your "sandwich artist" is an inattentive retard, as Subway employees tend to be.
