I wanna make this one day.

I'm thinking of getting into making those lunches, the variety of colour appeals to me.
How should I attempt these most time affectively?

Looks like the vegetables are boiled or steamed, but I'm only one person so I'd hate to only chop like half a carrot or a potato. How long will these keep but still taste crisp & fresh?

Braised squid in squid liver sauce.

After I finished the squid the chef took the remaining squid liver sauce and added a pad of butter then fried a bit of steamed rice in the sauce over high heat just until it began to crisp. I suspect cultural influence from Mao -- Koreans have a broken moral compass, much like the Chinese...

Example: When that ferry full of school kids sunk, the Korean gov't sent supplies and food to the families who had gathered together waiting for news of their children -- a full 30% of the people who took aid did not have a child on the ferry and had just shown up for free food.

They also seem to have adopted America's false sense of pride and an even more amplified sense of nationalism since the Korean war.

Example: The reason Korean companies LG and Samsung are such huge international competitors in so many markets is that these companies are state subsidized -- that's right -- ALL Koreans pay taxes that make the likes of Samsung and LG competitors on the world stage. They do this out of Korean pride -- stealing patents from Japan is nothing to them -- it knows no limits.

Presentation and ease of eating - Japanese people tend to pick up (most of) their dishes and hold them near their mouths while eating, and that's hard to do if everything's on one dish. Also, food touching each other is gross. Cleaning up isn't too bad, though. You get used to it.

I went to Yoshinoya a while ago; you know, Yoshinoya?
Well anyways there was an insane number of people there, and I couldn't get in.
Then, I looked at the banner hanging from the ceiling, and it had "150 yen off" written on it.
Oh, the stupidity. Those idiots.
You, don't come to Yoshinoya just because it's 150 yen off, fool.
It's only 150 yen, 1-5-0 YEN for crying out loud.
There're even entire families here. Family of 4, all out for some Yoshinoya, huh? How fucking nice.
"Alright, daddy's gonna order the extra-large." God I can't bear to watch.
You people, I'll give you 150 yen if you get out of those seats.
Yosinoya should be a bloody place.
That tense atmosphere, where two guys on opposite sides of the U-shaped table can start a fight at any time,
the stab-or-be-stabbed mentality, that's what's great about this place.
Women and children should screw off and stay home.
Anyways, I was about to start eating, and then the bastard beside me goes "extra-large, with extra sauce."
Who in the world orders extra sauce nowadays, you moron?
I want to ask him, "do you REALLY want to eat it with extra sauce?"
I want to interrogate him. I want to interrogate him for roughly an hour.
Are you sure you don't just want to try saying "extra sauce"?
Coming from a Yoshinoya veteran such as myself, the latest trend among us vets is this, extra green onion.
That's right, extra green onion. This is the vet's way of eating.
Extra green onion means more green onion than sauce. But on the other hand the price is a tad higher. This is the key.
And then, it's delicious. This is unbeatable.
However, if you order this then there is danger that you'll be marked by the employees from next time on; it's a double-edged sword.
I can't recommend it to amateurs.
What this all really means, though, is that you, should just stick with today's special.

Yoshinoya is the worst of the chains. They don't have the variety of Sukiya and it barely taste better than the much cheaper Sukiya.

Chikara Meshi was the best in my opinion, but Japanese people absolutely do go to those restaurants because they are cheap. CM was on average 100-200 yen but the servings were much bigger, they had more variety, and it tasted so much better.

The Japs have some kind of cultural obsession with a specific fish, Red Sea Bream aka Pagrus major, which they call "tai". The waffle things you're talking about are called "taiyaki", literally "grilled tai". They're made to look like the fish because the shape is auspicious or someshite.

You're actually sorta halfway there. I'm a huge fan of Japanese food and culture (actually going to be moving there soon, gotta deal with some visa bullshit), and I can tell you that if there's one thing that Japanese obsess over, it's that salty, meaty flavor called Umami. You can get a hint of the flavor from soy sauce, but it's a pretty complex flavor.

Luckily, a lot of junkfood over in the US/UK try to imitate this flavor through meaty/salty snacks like Doritos, Chips, etc., so that's not something you have to get used to. If you can get used to seafood, especially shrimp and octopus, then you're golden.

(Note - this is from someone who spends most of their time in Tokyo/Chiba, so that region's taste and cuisine shouldn't be taken as wholly representative of Japan)

Nah. I mainly post here because I occasionally have content to provide, and I like to ask OP about his wife's recipes. I like Japan, but I definitely do not want to be Japanese.

Is food more or less expensive in Japan than in America? I've seen really crazy bills from restaurants, but at the same time, I know you can get fillets of fish for like 50 cents, and supermarket bentos look affordable.

>> No.6237329

>>6237150
Japanese food is cheap. If you eat like a Japanese person, its about the same or cheaper than eating back home. If you try to eat a lot of meat or cook foreign meals all the time it will be expensive.

All restaurants are the same or more expensive than their American counterparts for the most part, all though gyudon and sushi can be very cheap.
