WHY THE FUCK IS GROUND BEEF SO FUCKING EXPENSIVE

it is fucking $5 a pound for the cheap ass kroger packages at my Food4Less which is just a poorer Ralphs. I thought it was supposed to be cheaper cooking your own burgers than buying mcdonalds, but it's fucking not. The only benefit is I get juicier burgers and my choice in buns. What the FUCK

Buy at cheap mexican demographic type groceries like fiesta or even a mexican meat market. Shits at least 2 or 3 dollars cheaper or you can get better discounts of other meats that help balance out your spending. Ground beef is expensive now because of the record high temps and droughts last year. This led to many ranchers being forced to slaughter more than they would have normally to save on feed costs. If you noticed, last year beef was very cheap.

Wow, this thread is blowing my mind a bit. I think I pay the equivalent of around $10 for a pound of mince. Two or three dollars is incredible. Or rather, the level of automation that must be involved is incredible.

I wonder what the numbers look like actually. If you get about 500lbs from a cow, charge $2 a pound, and it's slaughtered at eight months, you're effectively earning about $4 a day from the cow. That's enough for half an hour of a minimum wage employee's time, so you could hire a guy 9-5 and break even if he looks after 16 cows.

That's a lot better than I thought actually. It sounds a reasonable number if you have to muck out and feed them yourself, and if you've got machines doing that you could probably handle 50 or 60.

Hardly; I'm not sure you understand the role of the government in procuring goods for foodstuffs

The farm bill alone is essential for the sustainability of agribusiness in America. You subscribe to the free market by living in an industrialized world; this same market mandates that the pay for living in a remote community in the fabled "flyoverland" must cover the expenses associated with the location

Enter the market for crops, perfectly inelastic and usually not capable of providing a living for farmers (and that is barring natural phenomena which all but guarantee net loss). Yet the market requires such goods for the production of other products

Without the farm bill (representing just one of hundreds of ways the government ensures the continuity of the market) consumer goods would be wrought with inflated prices and volatility

For the majority of the cow's life, it needs next to no attention at all. A herd might need to be fed during the winter months, but that just involves dropping of a few rolls of hay every now and then. Most small scale cattle farms I've seen involve one guy working a whole herd in his off hours. A large amount of the costs for that kind of farming is just the land.

Because ALL beef is expensive right now.
It started when the ethanol mandates for gascame down about 10 years ago. They use corn for ethanol production-corn that used to be sold as cattle feed. This drove feed prices up drastically and lots of smaller ranchers cut their herds because they couldn't afford to feed them.
Then there was a corn crop failure in the Midwest a couple of years ago. Feed prices went up drastically AGAIN, and AGAIN smaller rancher cut their herds down.
Now we've got another problem-the domestic cattle herds aren't big enough to satisfy domestic demand-we are now importing beef from overseas. So prices are high because that's what it takes to get beef to you AND make it profitable for ranchers to build back their beef herds again.
